Here's the latest Mastodon development roadmap: blog.joinmastodon.org/2021/12/

Some interesting stuff in here, like reply controls, dynamic roles, and groups potentially replacing (or only supplementing?) the local timeline. Seems like some items have already been implemented in v4, though—like batch filter rules and post editing.

@lrhodes I read it as groups behave more like a local timeline. Not that local TLs become groups

@lrhodes Timestamp on that page is from "Dec 7, 2021" (year ago). Not sure if they just forgot to update the date.

Eris Renée

@autiomaa @lrhodes Nah this is out of date. It's from last year. Several of those features like the filter overhaul, android app, and post editing were already implemented.

Daniel Schildt

@Eris @lrhodes Still good to see some of the longer-term goals. Would be great if Eugen etc. would do (yearly?) update to the list. 😊

@Eris @autiomaa @lrhodes I mean, an annual roadmap still seems relevant. Maybe they're working on a new one for this coming year? I imagine with the cash influx they have incentive to create one.

Eris Renée

@psanker @autiomaa @lrhodes Aye I didn't say it's not relevant, just that it's out of date. Plenty of those features are still relevant. An update would be super nice tho.

There's also discussion that goes on on the official discord (which instance owners, patreon sponsors, and other contributors get access to) and a few days ago Eugen was talking about writing up a patreon update soon. Unsure about a roadmap update tho.

As a reminder, Mastodon gGmbH (the legal entity) is more or less a one-person operation. It's just Eugen as the sole employee. He pays contractors to handle stuff (like design or mobile app development, for example), but he drives the boat as the open source project's BDFL. So like, public-facing easily consumable updates like this might not be his highest priority, especially when a lot of it is still relevant.

@Eris @psanker @autiomaa Yeah, I'm not really faulting Eugen for now constantly updating us on the roadmap. Setting a reminder for a yearly update might not be a bad way to forestall a bunch of questions about it, though.

And I thought about deleting the post, but it's technically correct: This /is/ the latest public-facing roadmap.

Eris Renée

@lrhodes Oh yeah, you were correct. I was just commenting to @autiomaa since he mentioned the timestamp.

L. Rhodes

@autiomaa Ah, weird. Someone must have updated the page or something, because it showed up in my RSS feed this morning.

vanecx

@lrhodes removing the local timelines is one more giant-instance-centric feature. Just because mastodon.social is so huge and has therefore a useless local timeline.

L. Rhodes

@vanecx I do wonder if Eugen and others would have a different opinion of the local timeline if they were on smaller instances where local isn't such a fire hose.

Anders Thoresson

@lrhodes The group feature sound interesting for sure!

edit: ah, the roadmap is from a year ago

conspicuously missing from the Mastodon roadmap: making lists actually usable

- architecture (add to list without following on home timeline)
- function (curated, public lists)
- usability (current list management UI is terrible)

obviously very large conceptual overlap with what a group might be

also missing: any thinking of how discovery and search really are needed functionality

A couple of people have pointed out that this page is a year old. Sorry for the mix up. It popped up in my RSS feed this morning, so I glossed right over the publication date at the bottom of the page.

L. Rhodes

Though, it IS technically the latest roadmap.
