Twitter has banned Mastodon links & addresses in profile fields in an attempt to reduce the effectiveness of follow-finder tools like fedifinder.glitch.me/, calling any Mastodon link malware: "Account update failed: Description is considered malware."

At least for tech, this is closing the barn door after the horse bolted.

Most people I follow are primarily posting here. Some are cross posting and a few are only posting to Twitter, with the more technical discussions disproportionately here.

@danluu Same, including if you replace the @ with "at"

tbh I had expected Twtr to suffer a terminal technical meltdown long before a social/ego meltdown - but apparently the IT stack is still more resilient than someones ego....

@danluu the regex is only matching on 'mastondon.social' and other blacklisted popular servers. I can post my link to this smallish mastodon instance, without mastodon in the name

elly

@danluu you can also post made up links with mastodon in the name like mastodon.blah or whatever. so I think they have a list of blacklisted mastodon instances they've banned linking to

Nora. Yep.

@danluu lol. I added mine a while ago and it won't let me change it back now

@danluu I have seen that people were able to tweet the blocked links to the jet tracking repo by capitalizing a lower in the domain. Perhaps the profile link blocking is similarly incompetent.

@danluu for Twitter users in general it’s a petty & cruel thing as it will break communities if they need to quit Twitter but can’t easily communicate on where.

For the dev/infosec communities it’s 4 weeks too late to have an impact

Arian

@danluu how about putting your mastodon account's url at Location, that would be nice

Ray Ryan

@danluu But you'll find that "@ danluu @ mastodon.social" (take out the spaces, of course) still works just fine. So far.

@danluu how do you find tech Twitter on Mastodon?

Nire Bryce

@danluu its really funny to me that he's decided to do this, when the entire reason twitter was kept alive by half the investors seemed to be because without it tech companies might actually have to mentor people

@danluu Agree with Twitter being a shitshow at the moment, but Mastodon is really lacking discoverability features. I find it hard to find any new content that I am not already subscribed to.

@danluu When I tried clicking your link on Twitter, I got a "This seems like spam, are you sure you want to continue" type message.

@danluu Made an feature request at fedifinder's GitHub for an option to replace the commonly used (dot) and (at) for their respective characters. I think that will help for some time if it gets implemented.

Of course the journalist bans combined with banning Mastodon as "malware" caused a spike in Mastodon growth. Just as that was settling down, a new wave of bans caused yet another spike in growth.

This has been a pattern the past couple months. Every time Mastodon growth settles down (generally to a new, higher, rate), Elon causes another spike.

I guess Elon only sees the engagement his actions drive on Twitter and doesn't notice that he was and is the biggest driver of Mastodon growth?

@danluu yeah, I think Mastodon from Twitter change is in a tipping point process. It is possible to spend pretty large amounts of enjoyable time now just lurking. And while the language is less sharp and witty than the bird site, there is descent conversation.

Trash Panda

@danluu as a member of the latest wave, the pain of switching to Mastadon was finally less than the bullshit surrounding the bird app. As the bullshit bucket continues to fill, more people will be migrating.

@danluu at least in 2015 Twitter management was very careful about changes that might alienate users as it was aware it could run out of users to alienate
