@Gargron How about if we migrate to Pleroma server? Is it the same?

K 💫🦋

@Gargron how long does it take for the migration?

Paulina Sokolow

@Gargron I would like to initiate a Swedish platform for art. Any suggestions? Platform or just an account?

@Gargron one point seems to confuse new comers; Attempting to see profiles of users from other instances could lead to no posts although posts count show a number. What is the possibility mastodon instance would implement a sequence to fetch posts from remote instance, if it doesn't have any posts to show when the profile stats assert posts exist?

Brandon Keim

@Gargron What happens if, after the migration, someone follows my old account; will they automatically be forwarded to my new account? 🙏🏼

@Gargron

Hi, I've forgotten my Mastodon password but the lost password option isn't sending reset emails. How do I go about this?

Thanks.

@Gargron Very much a noob, but I successfully completed this in mere minutes a few days ago!

Chhavi Yadav

@Gargron what's the deal with different servers?

ListenToKarl

@Gargron just getting one set up right now hopefully not going to have to move it anywhere.

paul

@Gargron what if a server shuts down? Will all posts on there be lost forever?

Jacob Andersson

@Gargron I use different accounts on different servers. In many apps, likte Metatext, it's easy to switch between them.

cagedbeatnik

@Gargron many thanks . . why would you want to move once you on a server and up and running ?

OSIRIS 🎸 💻 🎙️

@Gargron Is there a future where migration includes posts as well? I think that's a big thing for people...

(I know the posts are still at the original account, but that's not quite the same)

Bret Mogilefsky

@Gargron I have yet to hear what one does if the old server is compromised/unavailable. Is there an answer?

dagmar

@Gargron I’m sure most people on here know the game much better than I, so please excuse the stupid Twitter head question: why would I want to move servers? What does that even mean? #stilllearning

RiderExMachina

@Gargron
Does this work if the new server has been defederated from the old server?

@Gargron
I have this question for a while now. If I decide to go back to the old server, can I move the followers again and how?

Antony Sheehan

@Gargron what if you want to go back to the first one.

This one looks different . Do they all look different?

Professor_Nostalgia

@Gargron if you want to bring a profile to another server where you are already resident, how do you do that?

Richard Grant

@Gargron @Gazpics76 If one has a distinct set of follows and followers on *each* of these 2 servers, and uses this procedure to consolidate onto a single one of them — does the data on the destination server get overwritten by the newly transferred data from the “old” server?

Jan Kaluza

@Gargron Do my followeds transfer automatically, or do I have to export them from the old and reimport them in the new one manually?

Nicolas Pettiaux

@Gargron thanks. What about the history of the exchanges ?

StuartB

@Gargron
Does the old account still exist when you do this, or is it removed?

Tarkus Iruma-kuneando🇦🇶

@Gargron So I have to create another account with another email and password before migrating?

Kosch

@Gargron Thank you - as I get a better idea of the different servers out there, this may be useful.

Dred

@Gargron loving the hashtag :ablobcatattention:

Pani Szatniarka

@Gargron but why do I need to migrate to another server, why can't I just follow all like on TT.
Why these servers can't be in one claster.
This is all sh..t here

Marty

@Gargron noob question is there any technical reason I would want to? Like too many on one server?

boo

@Gargron okay but how do you *find* new servers?

~Marcel

@Gargron It really matters in which server are you host? At what point is that limiting?

fiber

@Gargron Hi !!! Do you know if it's possible to read, if you have more than one server, the messages from that server loging just in one?

Nixie

@Gargron I'm moving out from your server soon (to my personal own), but I thankyou for being a good spot to land on!
I'll still be supporting yours, tho.

ebrulato

@Gargron
tio ne funkciis bone por mi :( bedaŭrinde mi perdis kelkajn sekvantojn kaj ĉiujn miajn sekvadojn...

Elin

@Gargron @ionica I moved last Friday and it went very well. One last tip: have a little patience while things are moving, it is not instant (it took 30-60 minutes, but it may depend on how overloaded the servers are).

IngridWong

@Gargron It is not so much that I fear losing followers but losing people I follow: can I take those with me too to another server?

JFPuget

@Gargron You should doanlowd who you follow first as this will not migrate. You'll need to follow again manually form the new account.

Amber Cannon

@Gargron I've been trying to figure this one out for days now!! Thank you!!

Anton Blake Horowitz

@Gargron
I'm guessing one will need patience for some while before migrating to those servers which are the most popular? Is it possible to be given a heads up when that might be, please? Or is it just a case of being persistent and to keep on trying?

carrabelloy

@Gargron ich habe das selbst erlebt und habe es meinem alten System allen mitgeteilt!

Vallee152

@Gargron the server (mastodon.social) gives me a forbidden error when trying to sign up.

John Appleby

@Gargron is it possible to transfer those I followed once changed server?

Mr. Lance E Sloan (Personal)

@Gargron, thanks for the info! I'm new to mastodon.social & thinking of moving to another server. Being a developer, I've considered @fosstodon, but their English-only policy (and moderation) is a turn-off for me.

> "Do not toot in languages other than English (which makes moderation prohibitively difficult). hub.fosstodon.org/why-fosstodo"

Konark

@Gargron but I lost my posts, likes and lists. Nice function!

Scott.social

@Gargron One of the biggest complaints/warnings to possible new Mastodon users is that any instance can disappear and you lose everything (followers, etc). It is surprising that this has not been addressed with a migrate export/backup feature. ie. let people plan ahead or do it automatically between two instances (sync).

Alsandair Toms

@Gargron that's great for followers thanks! It's there any way to not lose posts when migrating?

JD

@Gargron stupid question but where do you define a handle?

KERNOS

Hi Eugen

Is there a solution to migrate even if the old account already isn't accessable any longer?

In my case: bear.community was suspended for being over limits. Users haven't been informed ahead of the suspension. I was told that all data will be deleted in 10days if there's no solution with the community admin.

Not being warned that this could happen and not being able to save followers and data really doesn't feel good. It doesn't feels mastodon-like.

Thanks for any hint.
