@Richard_Littler This somewhat captures my reaction to people critiquing the inadequacy of #fediverse and #Mastodon generally right now, but I think there should be sympathy for all sides of this chaos. Social media for many isn't a tea room; it's how they work a livelihood, mutual aid, information support. Many people are panicked and fraught over the status of their support systems. (Hope I'm not sounding like a colonizer who's washed ashore, griping about the welcome party.)

@Richard_Littler I’ve really had extremely few incidences. Surprisingly so.

@Richard_Littler it's not Mastodon, it's particular servers in the Fediverse that are overburdened. My account here is a little slow, but my "old" (since 2017) account @AriadneAnarchist is quite speedy. I think there is a pervasive issue with servers that have taken on too many new users recently and were not properly scalable. There isn't a #Mastodon per se, as there is (once was) a Twitter.

It's true, maybe we could have mitigated the situation by not putting a large number of instances on masto.host or w/e its called, but also it's the kind of thing that people have done since the beginning of the internet. It's hard to argue against a specialized host with one button start-up. We just need a couple others like it to share the load.

@Richard_Littler slowness I can deal with -- what would be more of an issue is whether the villagers (regardless of their sexual orientation! :) ) have a tendency to look upon the city dwellers as not "our kind" -- in other words, whether there is a bit of a "whiteness" issue on Mastodon

@Richard_Littler when Mastodon is slow, it’s a great time to pick up a book, work on a hobby, go for a walk, or do something other than scroll social media.

@Richard_Littler I am in Canada and I have had more issues with twitter as of late than I have with Mastodon. Whatever they are doing at the company, Internationally twitter is getting really awful. Glitches and lags and crashing! Kudos to everyone who works and volunteers at Mastodon! I look forward to being here for a long time! 🤓
