People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!

@Richard_Littler It's actually more like a federation of independent towns, but everyone wants to live in the most popular towns and the smaller ones (which are as fast as ever) mostly get ignored.

Francis

@Richard_Littler

Yeah. That's a temporary problem

My major problems are that I cannot login in any other device. Also very difficult to find many people

marqle

@Richard_Littler there are faster servers, but that's cos they're empty :)

MaJ1 OLD

@Richard_Littler One of those new arrivals (well about a week or so ago) honestly, as ex IT support, I fully understand and am in awe of the admins coping so well with #TwitterMigration

themightydeak

@Richard_Littler people need something to bitch about...how will others know they are self important?

Hywel Mallett

@Richard_Littler There’s obviously a big variation from profile to profile, server to server.
If it stays this slow I might ask for my $7.99 per month back. πŸ˜‰

@Richard_Littler

Or for the Americans (who don't know what a tearoom is), imagine it's like Woodstock, with 400,000 people and only 6 port-a-potties.

@Richard_Littler I love it, it's like we all had Europe land in Nantucket, in a 1600 time frame

DiceDeedsArt

@Richard_Littler may draw Babs and Maureen...but no promises

@Richard_Littler

I was just on Twitter and so many people complaining. It's so annoying. They expect Mastodon to be Twitter 2.0 but if they got on here and experienced it a bit they might really like it. I sure do.

Sue

@Richard_Littler
Agree. Be kind to the Babs and Maureens out there.

@Richard_Littler@mastodon.soci ordinarily I would heart this on Twitter. But since this is the first post I want to β€œβ€οΈβ€œ on Mastodon and I don’t know how, I’m just going to say β€œBravo!” Now if I can just find the reply button…

IanH1953

@KatherineLilles

Hi Katherine, another newbie, for me the reply button is at the bottom of the message on the left hand side, looks like a couple of cartoon speech bubbles one on top of the other. Hope this helps.

@Richard_Littler Immediate gratification, to an unrealistic extent, has become the societal expectation in this hyper-connected world. I'm tired of it. I work in retail, and I see this there, too. Once upon a time the words "sold out" meant the customer got disappointed, but things happen. These days they threaten to (or do) call the police as if I've committed a crime against them, or become physically violent, all because they can't get what they want, when they want, because they want.

Mela Eckenfels

@Richard_Littler Just as it was in the early days of Twitter. We should revive the Failwhale.

Chuck Wack

@Richard_Littler πŸ˜‚πŸ€£, wait, there's a Tea Room?

robsalk

@Richard_Littler This is exactly the feeling of the migration... moving to a small village and not just missing the conveniences of the big city, but also the view out the window where you can see past your own neighborhood to a whole panorama of diverse and exciting activity. Will take some getting used to.

Jesse the Geek

@Richard_Littler I was *literally* messaging a friend to mention the ... slowness.
I then saw your post and agreed. Much like zoom.us after lockdown, there is going to be an adjustment period. #patience

Sherylbooks

@Richard_Littler very good analogy. Sorry, us newbies are still finding our way around. Personally, a slower pace is fine by me.

OhWeh 🀍 #RIPNatenom πŸ’”

@Richard_Littler Relax and pay your host/admin a decent fee. There is no advertising here, so your host must pay for server, power, etc. and must do the service.

iCounsellor On A Day Off πŸš™πŸ’¨

@Richard_Littler Happy to help out Babs & Maureen. I'll wash if someone dries πŸ‘πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Barry Schwartz

@Richard_Littler Twitter outages are hardly an unfamiliar thing, anyway. People are just grumpy. :)

Chris Funderburg 🐝

@Richard_Littler
Technically, "Mastodon" isn't slow. To steal your analogy, some of us saw everyone heading to the same village and decided to build luxury houses out in the countryside. 😁 i.e. Our own servers/clusters.

Barbara Tien

@Richard_Littler πŸ˜† Oh my, Richard, you just made my day. β˜•οΈ πŸ«– Care for a biscuit?

InternetEnzyme

@Richard_Littler I know. . .but it’s still so. . . Damn. . . Slow

ZincoDrone

@Richard_Littler Many people here are from the non-tech side of twitter. Make sure to be aware and inform individuals and don't hate on them for not understanding!

Wait, so there's no Starbucks? πŸ€”

Mastodon is not slow. On the instance where I'm "living" everything is working like a charm!

I can imagine that the bigger instances (no need to mention them) are full at this moment!

So, be patient new friends!. Everything here is run by volunteers, so no rush, please.

GhostOnTheHalfShell

@Richard_Littler

It's a bigger challenge for than for a for-profit corp. At least the rural farmer is able to expand the server farm, yes?

Joy Denebeim :tv: :tb: :pa:

@Richard_Littler @tammymakesthings
Remember, there's many #Mastodon nodes. If we spread out more it will take some of the load off the big sites.

djrobzilla

lol people are wild yo. Patience is a critical trait in this day and age

ClockworkSatan

@Richard_Littler Agreed. I'm on Mastodon day three and I've been very impressed by how friendly it is. I've not had a single sarcastic response to my posts or called unpleasant names yet, which has been a pleasant change.

I suspect that this may change once the birdsite eventually implodes and the right-wing racists and undesirables come flooding here. Hopefully the admins can keep a right rein on them if/when this happens.

Jay Wendt

@Richard_Littler The Mastodon was a larger and probably slower relative of the elephant. I do not expect rabbit quick, just steady consistent advancing.

Problem of my older generation. Electric lights worked well, had long before I was born. Grew up turn light switch on room instantly flooded with light. Now we expect that of everything.

Tortoise did win the race

Ann Marie Gamble

@Richard_Littler Hang in there, Babs and Maureen, and the scones are DELICIOUS πŸ˜†

Rob Carlson

@Richard_Littler The tearooms are doing fine, it's the supermarkets that have long lines.

Steve Foerster 🌐

@vees @Richard_Littler Very true. I'm on a smaller instance that's focused on open education, and there's literally been zero disruption at all.

Skip Cycle

@Richard_Littler So what is weird is I can click on the three dots and mute you or block you, but I have to actually click on your name to follow you. Maybe that can get fixed somehow. Just got here 15 mins ago.

Aunonymist

@Richard_Littler
Thanks for clarifying that #Mastodon is gay. That explains why it has been marginalized and not been taken serious for so long.

Oirectine73

@Richard_Littler Just takes some readjustment doesn't it? I keep checking myself whenever I find myself thinking it's slow. Reminding myself why I'm here. It's a good thing to keep reminding myself that.

@Richard_Littler I’ve had this thing since 2018 I still don’t get it

Blayne

@Richard_Littler oooof, that isn't a good look. Let me apoligize on behalf of all of us. I definitely noticed the speed but recognized, it's literally me πŸ˜† It's like being stuck in traffic and complaining about the traffic. We are the traffic!

Thomas # 3

@Richard_Littler great analogy haha. People have to be patient.

juanejot

@Richard_Littler Being new here, I do admit to a sense of expectation that we’ll soon hear a PSA from the stage, not to take the brown acid that’s going around.

JaniceGold10

@Richard_Littler Hi, you are my first mstdn follow! As a person who was in her 20s in the 70s, I can, indeed, imagine what it would be like to be stuck there forever- dark, but w great music!

David Jones

@Richard_Littler This reminds me of when my local #NonLeague club, average attendance 200, got over 1600 for an FA Cup game πŸ˜‚

QnShelaine

@Richard_Littler I quite like the slower pace! And friendliness.

Stephen Lyon

@Richard_Littler hey. Great post. Tech illiterate here. How the hell do I find more people on this site?? So confused about all the server stuff etc. Can you help or point me in the right direction? Patience is a skill, not a virtue. I practice it a lot. Thank you, Sir!

thajonah

@Richard_Littler Word. I don't care how slow it is, still better than that other place. Very impressed by the effort in ramping up capacity.πŸ˜€

Wakapapa

@Richard_Littler Babs and Maureen are splendid. I'll check out the breeze while waiting in line. Not a problem.

Charlotte (SCaLE 20x Arc)

@Richard_Littler this is an iconic toot! and one of the best metaphors I've ever read. Cheers!

Matt Ji πŸ‘½πŸ§ πŸ¦˜

@Richard_Littler in Europe,especially rural. We’re suspicious of our locals

Kirsty

@Richard_Littler everyone from the other place needs to recall with fondness and nostalgia the fail whale

Louise #FBPE

@Richard_Littler I love the analogy, I’d love to go to Babs and Maureen’s tea shop!

Martin Hall

@Richard_Littler I can remember way back when Twitter started. Lots of growing pains.
