— This isn't quite accurate. The Federated timeline shows every post *your instance* is aware of. This is primarily everybody followed by everyone on your instance, but it can also include users they've specifically searched for.
Some instances employ tools to catch more to bring into this timeline, but that's not generally the norm.
@keithjgrant Man, I wish I could include this degree of nuance in an article but I was so much longer than most as it is. Maybe if I write a book later I can get to that level of granularity...
