Posting my favorite computer in my collection: the red Sony HB-101 MSX. Itโ€™s utterly underpowered but just look at it! The color! The 80s futurism! The little joystick! The handle!

@polpo Lovely little machine! โค๏ธ

djsedaw

@polpo that is a elan enterprise's favorite son!

Thom
@jonn_blanchard @polpo When @GreatDismal talks about 'decks' in Neuromancer, those Sony MSX machines are always the image I get in my head.
Nonius.jgp

@polpo that is a beautiful machine indeed! One of the things I like about MSX is the variety of the machines, a lot of gems there.

requiem ๐Ÿด

@polpo These MSX machines are amazing (a significant influence on my RAIN-PSP design ๐Ÿ˜ )

Joao

@polpo I don't know this machine (I went ZX Spectrum48K -> Commodore 64), but it sure is gorgeous!
As someone who studies the subject in college, I'm amazed on what was accomplished with an 8 bit architecture at the time.

Aaron Weiss

@polpo It's really the optimism of putting both a handle and a joystick on it, as if the joystick won't come flying off the first time you bump into something while carrying it.

GabeMoralesVR

@aweiss @polpo there is a compartment on the bottom to securely hold the joystick during travel.

Ben Chandler

@polpo Thank you for sharing! I have ALWAYS been a fan of this wonderful style of design.

Ken Tindell

@polpo Aww, MSX. Iโ€™ve got had a nostalgia flashback.

GentlemanFinnGPT

@polpo what a beauty! Those two slots, what kind of media goes in there?

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@decibyte typically game or application cartridges, but also devices like floppy disk interfaces, RAM expansions, or better sound synthesis devices!

Morten

@polpo It's lovely. Is that 2 slots for some sort of external storage? What kind of operating system does it run?

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@m The slots are for game cartridges, RAM expansions, floppy interfaces, music synthesizer, etc... It runs MSX-DOS, a variant of MS-DOS developed by Microsoft for the platform. It's a funny feeling using it because of the familiarity of DOS, but it feels like an 8-bit micro.

@polpo I had bought a Tandy 1000 TX just before these came out. I was big into the ShadowRun roll playing game at the time and wished I could trade it in for one of these. (Glad I didnโ€™t, the Tandy was a better system! But this one looks so much better)

shapeless

@polpo That is one heck of an aesthetic. I wish they would make all-in-one computers like this these days, like what they did with the Raspberry Pi 4, I think it was?

Kyle Davis

@polpo i would use that as my daily driver if it had modern guts. What a great form factor.

Bret Mogilefsky

@polpo About 90% certain that that's Hiro Protagonist's deck.

Niklas

@polpo That's a beauty! Never seen one before.

If it had a dot matrix printer, it would really be the complete package.

Option8

@polpo How have I never seen one of these? I know MSX is pretty obscure in the US, but daaang.

Maximus Clarke

@polpo Sony has always cultivated strong design. Even when their products don't succeed, they usually look good.

GabeMoralesVR

@polpo i got a couple of msx2s as well. I have a boxed panasonic a1, but my hitbit as well is my favorite. I love the little joystick!

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@GabeMoralesVR the box art for the FS-A1 is so over the top, I love it.

GabeMoralesVR

@polpo there was another panasonic model with an even more ridiculous box art. They remind me of late 90's video card box art, like something you'd see from 3DFX lol.

Overall I just freaking love the MSX so much, it's a joy to write software for. Do you happen to have a panasonic FM Pak? I have a couple of games that work with it, like R-Type. Reminds me of the FM Cart for the Master System (for the obvious reasons).

SignalsAndSorcery

@polpo crazy, was that an actual consumer device or a prototype?

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@SignalsAndSorcery actual consumer device! it was a low end example of the MSX standard with the minimum amount of RAM. I got mine from Yahoo Auctions Japan a while ago and it looks like there are a couple listed there now, so seems like they sold a lot of them!

Punch's Videogamezone :msx:

@polpo yep, this is one of the cooler MSX1 models. I'd rather use a regular black/grey one from Sony (I actually use a HB-T7 with the sweet LED modem indicator panel) but I still have a soft spot for that shiny red paint and the little joystick you can screw into the direction keys.

parasurv ๐Ÿ”– me
@polpo Nice! Finally a computer keyboard where Ctrl is in the right place! :)
Olivier

@polpo
Incredibly enough, those things still sell for one to several hundreds on eBay. And they don't look half as good as your model.

David

@polpo Love it, just screams of a bright, better tomorrow

Alonealastalovedalongthe

@polpo

Gorgeous, that vibrant red with faded greys and oranges is just perfect. Looks like it is always going reallllllllllyyy fast

Renoir dana

@polpo
Thanks ! I saw one of those in an old 80's magazine and the built-in joystick stuck with me - I always wondered what the machine was!

Nice styling, and the red looks great!

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@emanuel @tsturm a small warning, it has a tiny amount of RAM, only 16K. But it can be expanded with cartridges...

DELETED

@polpo @emanuel I had completely forgotten that there were 16K MSX machines.

Emanuel Schleussinger๐Ÿ”น

@polpo @tsturm thanks for the kind warning. It seems there is even a boxed one for sale on ebay now, including the matching, red color memory expansion. But oh my, these things ain't cheap for sure...

Emanuel Schleussinger๐Ÿ”น

@polpo @tsturm yes, indeed the HB-201 with 64K seems a more sensible machine, but i suppose its not available in red.

Just Doz

@polpo. Msx never really clicked with me, although I always admired the build quality and feel of Sony's hit bit stuff.

Vidar Hokstad / Galaxy Bound

@polpo I never used one, but they're certainly iconic. I remember being fascinated by the design and by the built in joystick. Though given that Wico's were the only joysticks I was incapable of destroying by the dozen, it's probably a good think I never got one...

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@vidarh I'm afraid to use the joystick on this, seems like it'd break easily! Thankfully it has standard joystick ports on the side

FiXato

@polpo certainly one of the prettier models, yes; don't forget to include the #MSX hashtag so some more MSX lovers get their eyeballs on it. ;)

Another #HitBit that I enjoy the aesthetics of, is the Sony HB-F1XD, which also sports that lovely red, albeit as a more subtle accent.

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@FiXato thanks for the suggestion, I'm still not in the practice of using hashtags!

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@FiXato and the HB-F1XD is next on my list of machines to get! I missed getting one for under $100 USD a week ago and I'm kicking myself.

FiXato

@polpo my #MSX of choice is still the Philips #NMS8250 #MSX2, mostly because it's the one I grew up with, and there's just something about having a separate keyboard, and being able to place a monitor on top of the machine.

#DailyPhoto #FiXatoFoto #retrocomputing

Wintermute_BBS :verified: โ›”

@FiXato @polpo what a wonderful machine! the #MSX world always amazes me in terms of design and color descisions.

bitsofbas

@Wintermute_BBS @FiXato @polpo This must be one of my favourite #MSX machines to look at. And one of the worst to actually use ๐Ÿ˜‚

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@bitsofbas @Wintermute_BBS @FiXato I keep seeing people post cool Philips MSX machines... I like how they used metal in their designs!

Wintermute_BBS :verified: โ›”

@polpo @bitsofbas @FiXato yes, those philips machines look great indeed. But I fancy that red HitBit made by Sony!

bitsofbas

@polpo @Wintermute_BBS @FiXato Often it's metal spray on the outside, unfortunately. That said, the innards are full of metal. Some models are very heavy indeed!

My Philips NMS8280 probably weighs more than the CRT on top of it ๐Ÿ˜‚

RedRaven85

@polpo That is gorgeous... I am just waiting to see if anyone decides to mod this to put a Raspberry Pi 4 in it as the computer instead. Find a way to make everything work with it and turn it into a more powerful portable rig.

With all the new portable displays that are coming out this could be a fun little replacement for a 'laptop'.

Dennis Jernberg

@polpo That's one of the prettiest computers I've ever seen. And I was in love with the Atari ST back in those days.

Amazing considering that #MSX is almost literally just ColecoVision as a computer -- not the Adam (which destroyed Coleco), the SpectraVision one.

Destiny :thisisfine:

@polpo ๐Ÿ˜ why canโ€™t more things be designed like this! Makes me nostalgic for my red Speak & Spell

Yves Luther

@polpo That red MSX was one of my holly grails when I was still collecting retro computers. Unfortunately my wife intervened and now I am into mechanical keyboards and out of space.

Peter Yang, MD - Yaz

@polpo That's pretty awesome, especially the built-in joystick. Reminds me of the one I used with a Tandy 1000 HX.

RalfWausE

@polpo Oh boy, what a beauty!

Why are our computers today looking so... boring

Martin Tuip

@polpo omg a MSX .. I still have mine in a box somewhere, a Philips VG8020.

Ian Scott :apple_inc: ๐Ÿ™

@Mtuip I love how those Philips machines look. They had some great design!

Alastair Rankine

@polpo Wow, awesome. The โ€˜Itโ€™s a Sonyโ€™ stickers are icing on the cake.

Amber Or Bust

@polpo Gorgeous: sums up everything about that thrilling period in the early '80s that culminated in my purchase (with financial assistance from my parents) my BBC Model B. But I would have been sorely tempted by that Sony on looks and ergonomics alone!

Emma H :blobcatcoffee:

@polpo

I want to find one of those and put an ARM single board computer innit if it's not working.

Raxxie

@polpo wow, and it's red! Love it :)

Michael Crider

@polpo c'mon, that's obviously not a computer, it's a prop from Akira.

how can you have a prop from an animated movie I don't know I didn't think this through

Paul Nicholas :mastodon:

@polpo ooh... did NOT know about the handle! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
Always loved the design of this machine.

Camiel Hirschberg

@polpo Oh yeah i love that one, such cyberdeck aesthetics, i'd almost just try to find/recreate one and but in a RP4 in it :)

Internet Dad ๐Ÿ€

@polpo Oh my! You may have shown me something to compete with my beloved Amstrad.

Jim Finnis

@polpo Mother of God, that's not a computer, that's a cyberdeck from Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy.

Jeff

@polpo

Heck yeah, gotta love a bright red Hit Bit! The HB-101 is definitely on my list of microcomputers to acquire. It's so darned beautiful!

Unfortunately, my current collection is lacking in machines from the Japanese market, so my only MSX is a relatively boring Canon V-10.

AT Hayes

@polpo Wow, this is a little like a fever dream!

penguin42

@polpo Very nice! I'd have to say that joystick looks odd on a device designed to be carried, how many people twanged it's shaft off while carrying it?

Jack Crouch

@polpo @raxxie Geez. I was a high school computer science teacher through this era, and made a big point of knowing about flashy computers and whatnot to share with my students. Despite this, now and then I see an AMAZING ๐Ÿ˜ป piece of micro-computer history that was never on my radar AT ALL. Just wow.

Raxxie

@ubikandtonic @polpo I've got my first computer when I was 19 y.o. -it was ugly and slow and my dad had to sell my brother's car (which was also ugly and slow) in order to buy it. I'd love to have one like this one!

AtariXbox

@polpo is that officially a HitBit? Amazing piece of design.

VEEB Projects

@polpo it instantly makes me think of this (by Ralph Willis)...

stephen ryner jr

@polpo "It was hot, the night we burned Chrome. Out in the malls and plazas, moths were batting themselves to death against the neon, but in Bobby's loft the only light came from a monitor screen and the green and red LEDs on the face of the matrix simulator. I knew every chip in Bobby's simulator by heart; it looked like a workaday Ono-Sendai VII, the "Cyberspace Seven," but I'd rebuilt it so many times you'd have a hard time finding a square millimeter of factory circuitry in all that silicon"

Leigh Garland

@polpo holy moley - that's what I want any computer I buy to look like. Forget all this homogenous grey brushed aluminium...

สžuแด‰ิ€ โœ…

@polpo The #MSX lines and the #SAMCoupรฉ were two things I really wanted to play with back in my #Spectrum days.

This is a beautiful example and I'd have loved to own something like this back then.

But then the #Amiga came along and all my dreams came true.

Iain Farrell

@polpo @ianbetteridge this is the most amazing looking computer. I love it!
