#Journalists: We have an opportunity to define better ethics around how we treat non-public figures on Mastodon. Some Qs to get the convo going (non-journos, please weigh in too!):

• How do we responsibly boost, quote, link to, and otherwise cite public posts by non-public figures?

• Does the decentralized nature of Mastodon change the nature of how we treat what is shared here vs centralized, corporate platforms?

• How do we responsibly judge who has power and who doesn’t on Mastodon?

@couts what do you mean by “power”? Do you mean credibility? Not a journalist but it would be nice to see more credible people quoted rather than whoever fits the narrative of the article. I’ve seen a lot of “message me if you… X Y Z” from journalists on the bird app and that’s finding quotes to fit a narrative.

I would much prefer to see more journalism that reports the objective facts, with any commentary coming from people who know the subject well. Quote them in the article and then promote their voice for people interested in learning more.

I’m still not certain why you used the word power but you have an opportunity here to learn from people who otherwise might not have had any ability to impact the discussion around a subject.

@jillianratliff Thanks for the insights. I don’t mean “credibility.” I mean power over other people in the context of the Mastodon ecosystem. For example, a person with a high follower count has the power to put any person whose toot they boost into a brighter spotlight than the poster intended. The operator of an instance has power over the privacy of anyone who’s using their instance.

@couts @jillianratliff sir, you are a journalist.
you write shit for a newspaper.
your job can be boiled down to wielding a "brighter spotlight than the poster intended" for a living.
