Also, if at any point you're having trouble keeping up with moderation and stuff there is no shame in closing registration temporarily, other instances have done that, mastodon works better with many medium instances rather than really big ones!

We actually did stop approving accounts for a bit over the weekend, to give the backend some breathing space, but it's been flying along since.

Agreed, that smaller is better. "small" is an arbitrary number these days, though when it comes to user counts. I'm happy to keep registrations open until we see numbers plateau. Mine is only one of many opinions feeding into the pot now, though!

Yeah in my opinion what "small" mean depend on the context of each instance. An instance becomes too big when either:
- the server can't keep up
- the moderation team is overwhelmed and/or burnt out

@Nocta Thanks to @mastohost item 1 is dealt with.

On the second point, that varies from day to day. In the last week, we've had close to 100 reports to deal with. Most of these have been open & close, but others required direct interaction with users and the to & fro there can weigh heavily on the mind.

We're a team of 6 right now and expanding all the time. We'll be handing off ownership to a collective ASAP.

All of this is managed by masto.host - without whom we'd have been crushed within a couple of hours. I've never been happier to have moved to a managed option a couple of years ago, when my poorly managed, tiny instance was beginning to cost me a lot more than I was willing to spend on a hobby.
