Okay, pictures (Mastodon, Pixelfed) are pretty fine, music (Funkwhale) is less so, but okay, but things like Peertube... Oh, this hits HARD. Hosting/storing video is absurdly expensive. And there probably will be some even more expensive meduims, potentially.

And I know that there are things like S3 providers who sell storage a dime a ton separately from your server resources, but... it just feels wrong to surrender my dear users' data to Jeff Bezos or the like. And migrating this kinds of storage is... Bluegh.

So I think we'd need something like IPFS. The problem is, as I see it, in order to actually work properly it needs to be implemented client-side.

@cwebber also it potentially might help with instance-to-instance migration: you don't actually need to move the files with you, the URI stays the same, the server just pins them elsewhere
