It’s amazing how quickly I’ve gone from “What the hell is Mastodon?” to “Maybe I should start a Mastodon server?”

@joannastern Welcome to @Mastodon, from your friend 🤗 and your IT support 😉

Kent Akgungor, CFA

@joannastern it definitely feels a bit like email where you can go the gmail or yahoo route or get your own custom domain. Given the lack of a verified badge on here, having your own server also seems like a good way to prove your identity to other users. For journalists especially, it seems to me that it would make a lot of sense to have a server for your organization with all staff having @name@organization.com handles. Maybe the WSJ should start one up?

@kent That's quite a good use for hosting your own server. Maybe Mastodon should push that so the network can grow more.

@kent @joannastern I love the idea of organizations setting up their own closed instances on a trusted domain name to establish identity verification.

An easy way to "verify" yourself without needing to go to that trouble is to set up link verification on your profile: mstdn.social/@feditips/1062741

A special link on any website you own pointing at your Mastodon profile will show with a check mark on your profile page.

@Eliot_L @kent @joannastern that works great for individuals but not for people working for a big organization like BBC. For example if John Doe is a journalist there I could register johndoe(dot)online and fake my legitimate account.

Most people don't know whether some journalist owns johndoe(dot)co.uk or johndoe(dot)online

@joannastern ha ha ha. You can spin up an instance for roughly the same price as a blue check!

@spotted @joannastern

There seems to be some overload:

"Notice: due to the recent influx of traffic, new subscriptions are closed. Follow @mastohost for updates."

#MastodonMigration

CEbbinghaus

@spotted Holy shit you are right. That is so funny and also makes so much sense. I feel like there is just a little too much divide between the instances as of right now for me to spin one up but I would totally do that instead of paying for twitter

Stacy Cash

@spotted @joannastern Ohhh... That may be interesting when they are available again!

@joannastern Hello and welcome to Mastodon (and the Fediverse)! There’s been a really great community of people slowly developing over here for the past few years. And it’s all based on a pretty neat decentralized network as you probably already know. Happy to see Twitter folk finding a home here and growing the community. Lots of people here are willing to help answer questions as you get to know the place, don’t hesitate to ask!

Mal

@joannastern Yes! I don't have USD44B lying around but I, too, would like to own a Twitter 😀

Allen Stenhaus

@joannastern Only thing stopping me right now is time & money, so I totally get the feeling.

@joannastern this is the spirit. Welcome to the Fediverse, Joanna. Good to have you here 😊

Ernie Smith

@joannastern Honestly this is such an opportunity. The onboarding process is rough, but the potential is so high.

It solves the past Twitter newbie challenge of “finding your people” without algorithms.

Suryo☀️

@joannastern same. It just happened just in the last few days.

Santam Chakraborty

@joannastern I can totally empathaize. I was wondering for quite some time if I should start a server for #RadOnc

Terry Hancock

@joannastern

Well. If this keeps up (and at present, it is _accelerating_), we're going to need more instances.

CEbbinghaus

@TerryHancock Exactly what I have been thinking. I love that Germany has set up dozens of instances for the regions and large cities but that could totally be expanded to other countries with a large user base.
*Cough Cough US Cough*

Terry Hancock

@CEbbinghaus
Although it's technically feasible, it seems like it would be politically unlikely to see state-funded instances in the US.

There is fanatical opposition to public services in the USA, even for obvious things.

I wish we were more enlightened about that.

CEbbinghaus

@TerryHancock None of the instances in Germany are state-funded. Usually smaller groups or communities within those provinces or cities set up their own instances. I feel like it would be a great little project for universities or more technically inclined groups within Mainland US

DELETED

@CEbbinghaus @TerryHancock That’s not quite right. There is social.bund.de/explore and bawü.social/explore specifically for government agencies and there is also edi.social/explore (internal) and det.social/about (public), funded by the public-service television broadcaster ZDF. They are all funded with taxpayer’s money.

And the you also have EU Video and EU Voice as a pilot project.

Steve Riggins

@joannastern @Gargron so glad to see you here. And if you move, it’ll migrate my follow!

Mike Rodriquez

@joannastern I'm reading the setup instructions this evening!

Jack Yan (甄爵恩)

@joannastern Thinking this, too, but I know I lack the technical expertise!

Jared Cash

@joannastern Same. I don't NEED to, but I think it would be fun. 😂

Enzo

@joannastern this is me, trying (and failing) to install Mastodon on AWS these past few days.

~ajhalili2006 (he/they)

@joannastern For me, it's from "wth is matrix (the protocol, not the series)" to "maybe i should start a Matrix homeserver" to "How do i bring ActivityPub-based APis to Matrix while introducing domain delegation to the RFC side?".

ninechars

@joannastern I know right? I've got an old box and a static IP and I know my way around a webserver and I'm thinking...

CEbbinghaus

@ninechars Continue thinking. The #Fediverse could use any additional processing power to take the load off of the "popular" servers

何事西风 :nekomimi_girl_emoji_007: 不待人
@joannastern You should start a Pleroma server. It's more friendly and more customizable than Mastodon.
rezonant

@joannastern that's what I did. not too bad to do on kubernetes, though the available helm chart needed some work. I'll put my fixed charts up on GitHub coming up here

Geotechland

@joannastern

Once you get past the sign up process, you discover its great not to be bombarded with advertisements. 🤓

MFTech

Given the number of recent Twitter migrants, we all better start servers…

Laurie Feinswog

@joannastern i think that’s stage 4. It’s in the handbook somewhere.

Raymond K

@joannastern What are the benefits of having your own server? That is one of my questions. Not that I think I will go down that path. But I am curious about the drivers for that kind of decision.

lamp

@dltq @joannastern decide what/if you want to block. add whatever relays you want to use. many urself look cool with funny domain name. and fun

Ben

@joannastern ikr, i'm also thinking the same thing haha

Christian Wilkie

@joannastern Right? I think that's the natural progression.

Dallas Groot

@joannastern I’m the same way. I have a pixelfed server though, but it’s nice that they both kinda blend in with each other.

Gergely Imreh

@joannastern for me it was even negative time delay, been thinking of starting a server from our local hackerspace before even stopped asking much what the heck is mastodon really. I need to re-evaluate my maker instincts a bit.

Akash Chowdhury

@joannastern i am feeling its very complicated.. i got on with this server c.im and now i want something sounding cooler.. unable to understand what to do..

ondiepsfinest

@joannastern how do you do this? I’d might be interested too

Frischa

@joannastern did you figure this out? Are different servers faster? I joined the first one that had room but it is buggy

Talon

@joannastern The fediverse can always use more instances! :dragon_happy:

metallcorn 🐧

@joannastern i think, the better idea is support people who already manage instance you are using. If course, if that instance is good)
