This is the second or third mention of people migrating elsewhere I've seen in the last couple of days.

Is there something glitching with mastodon.social? Or are people just bailing to join other instances for whatever other reasons?

I'd heard maybe a year back that there are people who just blacklist mastodon.social accounts as a matter of (some mysterious) course, but I wasn't sure what the issue there was, either.

@reay @pludikovsky Over the past couple of days there was some noticeable latency and instability, but that wasn't the reason that I spun up thegem.city/.

I really believe in the idea of having regional / semi-local instances as a community building tool. I think the fediverse is going to be the thing that tips the scales towards hyper-connected local groups in a way that twitter, reddit, and next-door never really could be.

Ah! Yeah, I've been noticing a lot of glitching on it when I've been trying to log on in the last couple of days. But given my not unusual tech problems, hadn't connected those two things.

I think you've got a solid idea making more local instances. If I had the tech knowhow (and importantly, didn't have said common tech issues), I'd consider doing the same.
