Gregory's ServerI'm considering proposing a class to SFPC that explores "horizontal systems", social and technical systems that function without needing leaders. the initial idea is that the classes would alternate between discussions of anarchist theory (eg Maletesta, Goldman) and decentralized protocols like BitTorrent and git, maybe getting into systems that are decentralized in principle but centralized in practice like email and talking about how these things can fail.

I want people to come away thinking about systems they participate in and build that have "roles" for people like "admin" and what kind of implicit rigid power dynamics they are reproducing without much thought. which is not to say that such things are bad or wrong, just that they have a weight to them that I think is invisible to most of us because of their ubiquity.
