Are you lovely people interested in #grotesque sculptures and #gargoyles from #medieval churches? I saw some prime examples this summer and find them amazing inspiration for creature/character design. Have a look at these beauties from #Metz cathedral: #MedievalSculpture

@jeroen Cool. If ppl are interested there will be more posts like this. Will try to upload decent resolutions for study purposes.

@eyeling oh wow, I've never seen gargoyles that weren't grotesques but "regular" animals

@daniel_bohrer Most cathedrals have both fantastical/demonic creatures and stylised animals. And everything in between.

@eyeling very nice, like a gargoyle, so would like to see more. Never seen a horse one before!

#Metz Cathedral also has some lovely glass windows, including one set by Marc Chagall

The cathedral of Laon has got the best non-chimeric animal sculptures I've ever seen. There are 16 oxen that look slightly stoned (pun not intended). There is no documentation why those common beats of burden are such a dominant feature, only a medieval legend about their miraculous help during construction. #MedievalSculpture #gothic

My personal Laon favourites are the hippo and the rhino above the western gates. I mean... a naturalistisc hippo and a rhino? How cool is that. The first hippo since antiquity was brought to Europe in 1823. But these artists have definitely seen such an animal, which means they traveled a lot.
