Playing with Jonas' latest WIP mobile shell branch. It's honestly more fluid than my Android phone with Lineage, super impressive given the much weaker hardware ✨️

@tbernard Whoah a lot has changed since the last time I saw it. Pretty nice :)

Nabili

@tbernard impressive! Is it planned to add phone specific feature such as call receive from Lock Screen?

Tobias Bernard

@Nabili Yes, but not sure about the details/timeline

hacknorris

@tbernard only if my mobile would be supported :/ but isnt and never will be :/ only android :/

Danny Colin

@hacknorris @tbernard Depending on the model, it may be possible to run Droidian (based on Halium so it uses part of the Android stack under the hood)

hacknorris

@dannycolin waah. On my mobile even pmos build isnt finished. Where some droidian. Lmfao...

Danny Colin

@hacknorris you can ask the droidian folks. There are links on droidian.org/ to contact them.

@dannycolin

Lioh

@tbernard where can I find it? Are there Images available for the PinePhone?

Tobias Bernard

@lioh It's a WIP branch at this point, but I imagine someone will make testing images eventually. GNOME OS images would be cool 🙃

@tbernard I'm really hoping this gets eventually finished, in concept this is so much better than phosh.

@tbernard I can't wait to try gnome on mobile! May I ask you what phone and what OS are you using in the video? (I see a GnomeOS window there but it may just be a browser tab)

Tobias Bernard

@racchio Jonas tried a bunch of distros, but he said they all kinda suck because of the bad hardware enablement situation (among other things). The OS in the video is Arch ARM with custom mutter/gnome-shell and some other tweaks.

DELETED

@tbernard thank you! Being an Arch user on desktop I am far more excited to know that Arch is working fairly good on Arm too!!!

Josh Fowler

@tbernard Is there a build of this I could throw on my PP or PPP?

LPS

@tbernard now this, would make me switch to a linux phone:)

Xerz! :blobcathearttrans:

@tbernard ok for real: how the hell did this get done so fast????????

ThatOneCalculator

@tbernard@mastodon.social this looks crazy impressive, link to the fork? I honestly want to buy a Linux phone just for this

guenther

@tbernard Eleven years after its initial release, gnome shell finally seems to have found its way onto the devices it was designed for.

Looks so cool! GNOME is taking the cake on mobile now however i won't switch to pure Linux based phone yet except it if goes to around 2% like desktop Linux now and has more apps. I'm also tired of Android's lagginess and want something like iOS but FOSS and on a cheaper phone and i think i found it!

@tbernard my phone is about that fluid, but it's also a flagship phone that's only 22 months old

@tbernard that looks really good! Hopefully there'll be a way to hide the gesture bar at the bottom while retaining the ability to perform gestures though. 😅 It's one of my biggest gripes with Android right now, at least from a design perspective.

Gienion

@amxmln @tbernard I use /e/OS, and with it you have the option.

@tbernard
I absolutely love this. Please, please keep up the great work towards gnome mobile. I would love to use this in the future.

Albin Larsson

@tbernard can't wait to try this, Gnome's applications screen is something I'm very much missing on Phosh.
