#GalliumOS is running well enough on my 5-year-old Dell #Chromebook, but I have discovered some things about it:

- It is abandonware. Last OS update released in 2019, official Reddit and IRC channel are pretty much dead.

- It is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Mainstream support ends April 2023.

So, I'm going to try some other lightweight, maintained distros and see if I can find one that works with my particular hardware.

I installed #Xubuntu 22.04 on the #Chromebook and, except for the lack of top row keyboard support (where the function keys would be on a non-Chromebook keyboard), it works GREAT. It has full trackpad support, which Lubuntu lacked (no right-click is a deal-breaker). And it's a modern, supported distro! Looks like my $25 investment in a 5-year-old Chromebook paid off.

What really gets my knickers in a twist is that the local high school was forced to dispose of these nifty little machines for $25 a pop only because #Google ended #ChromeOS support for this #Chromebook model. It posed a security risk and they were forced to purchase new Chromebooks. This planned obsolescence diverts money from already strained schools into Google's pockets and likely generates an obscene amount of e-waste. Not cool.
