😍 Pinch me, I must be dreaming. This is a new smartwatch with a braille interface for blind users. What's even better is how beautiful the hardware is, even though users can't see it. Care and attention to detail to the max.

This is a close-up image of a Braille watch designed for visually impaired users. The circular watch face features raised Braille dots that allow the wearer to read the time by touch. The dots are arranged in a clear pattern, divided by a central line, likely indicating hours on one side and minutes on the other. The watch has a minimalist metal body, textured side buttons, and a leather strap visible in the background. Its design is sleek and functional, emphasizing accessibility.

@FediThing That is actually super awesome and not only for the normal reason I love unusual watches. πŸ₯°

@glennsorrentino ...what's up with the strap on the right? I hope it's detachable.

@glennsorrentino I think that this even has merits for users with sight! Being able to tell the time without looking away? Having a fun stim toy on the wrist? I can feel the curb-cut effect.

@glennsorrentino That is awesome. Having once memorised the Braille alphabet, I now find myself trying to decipher what's on the surface, but alas, I'm a bit rusty now. EOPE?

Side note: when you learn the Braille alphabet, you start noticing it in various public contexts... and it's amazing how often it's been stuck on upside down. :(

That watch is solving a problem that doesn't exist for me as a blind person. They had plans for a sub $1000 braille display. That would have solved something. Not this. And can you be a little led ableist? Only 10% of blind people have zero vision.

The Yangsi Michael Dillon

@glennsorrentino
Also, only a relative small percentage of blind people are braille literate.

@anantagd @glennsorrentino Nobody is ableist' here and neither were people generalized in the original post. You're creating problems and accusations out of thin air.

@Natanox
"It's a beautifully looking device, of course this is meaningless to blind people." See above. The entire fixation on technology in this case is due to #ableism. Blindness is a spectrum. Acting as if this device solves any problem for blind people is ridiculous. I've been following this co ever since they made a lot of noise about a refreshable braille display that never materialized. And now they have their watch that no one can ever buy.

Natasha Nox πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ

@anantagd That was never said in this way anywhere. You're changing a quote so it can be exaggerated, making it sound like ableism. Stop this.

@anantagd @glennsorrentino Lol yeah sure, because I mentioned accessibility in my post so often, aside from criticizing you spouting accusations senselessly.
You're just a jerk looking for trouble. πŸ™„

@anantagd thanks for the callout. I updated the post’s language: β€œβ€¦braille interface for blind users…”

@glennsorrentino I think I saw a concept of something like this a long time ago - wonderful that it now exists as a real product! And yes, it's absolutely lovely, I want to learn braille just so I can use this (JK, I wouldn't buy a thing for fun that could have benefitted another person for real) 🀩

@glennsorrentino I am deeply curious about the price and similar of this. It seems awesome, I am deeply curious about how well it lasts and how much it costs (and kinda wondering how easily I can learn braile because it -looks- amazing to me, and being able to quickly 'read' a message I get...though that's probably just a passing whim).

@glennsorrentino That is so beautiful, I'd buy it and wear it even though I'm not sight-impaired.

@glennsorrentino the product either is not available anymore or is hidden from me based on my geolocation.

Nonetheless, great concept but I wish I could have seen all its marketing stuff on its product page.

@glennsorrentino I love unusual watches and electronic Braille displays, but I am also concerned about the practicality of this watch.
This is very similar to the watch my blind dad used, $30 at most places today.
(edit for spelling)

Picture of a silver wristwatch. The glass is hinges open to allow a blind user to feel the hour and minute hands to determine the time.

@LockEx
I prefer watches like that, they're more inclusive, you don't have to be braille literate to read it.

I really like Bradley tactile watches.

"[It] features raised hour markers that allow you to feel the time by touch […].

Two magnetized ball bearings travel around the watch face in separate, recessed tracks: one track around the center of the watch face's surface for the minute, and one track around the outside edge […] for the hour."
