@i0null
“I’ve gotta find time to read that book” he said as he continued scrolling.

@i0null This is a very great book. Highly recommended. Also, published after his death, The Varieties of Scientific Experience.

The man should be considered a saint.

@i0null hearing sagans words read at this cadence and carelessness is super grating

@i0null

There are a million reasons this would never be broadcast on the news today, but the most obvious one is that Sagan's first sentence, as quoted, would require two commercial breaks and a "now Piper will interview a monkey on roller skates" moment.

@i0null That guy shouldn't have that word.. he's a word exerciser.

@i0null All people have to think is English or their other language

Truly one of the greatest human beings ever, Carl Sagan is so greatly missed.

@i0null "here we are 25 years later realising what he was trying to tell us back then"

It took you all 25 years to understand what he clearly articulated at the time? 🤣

@i0null I lack a lot of context being from not USA, but the fact this old media head read those words is pretty funny.

@i0null Carl Sagan wrote it in a book. It was quoted in the very media Sagan was worried about concentrated into 90 seconds. Luckily a bit more than 10 seconds. I find it ironic.

@i0null

Well that was so spot on and what I have been witnessing in the last 25 years…

And 25 years before that, there was John Brunner with predictions for even bleaker futures.

@dcoderlt The Sheep Look Up? I’ve not read that one yet. The next closest one i was thinking of (from a technological PoV) is Brave New World which was 40 years before that one.

@i0null Yeah sure, it really sucks to have uneducated foolish people around. But the crystal clutching reality TV watching people didn’t create sub-prime mortgages, social media engagement algorithms, surveillance capitalism and privacy busting dossiers used for ad-tech. They didn’t do PR for petroleum companies claiming oil and plastics were harmless, start ideological media echo-chambers or court-packing organizations that take over the courts, and so on. Did I mention large legacy media corporations and their many distortions? Plenty of other examples could be added.

These were all made by highly educated people, many from elite universities and many with depth in science and with rationalistic viewpoints. If we are blaming groups of people for problems, there are lots of people who are none of things Sagan is complaining about but who are nonetheless actually helping drive things to the place where we are now. 🤷

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been.

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
