Doing some software archaeology with @jimmac today, looking at webOS on the Touchpad and Palm Pre.

It's very cool to see how far ahead of its time this was, and also how many elements from it survived in GNOME in some form! And of course, the multitasking is still unmatched by any more recent mobile platform :)

A quick look at some of the core apps and in-app UI patterns, including Calendar and Photos.

Top left app menu! Does this look familiar to anyone? 🙃

Tobias Bernard

What happens if you make a huuuuuuge stack of app cards?

Tobias Bernard

Ever wonder where the GNOME Shell "just type" search thing comes from?

Tobias Bernard

Managed to get the Messages app to *somewhat* work. Not much to see, but it shows off a few more in-app design patterns.

@tbernard immediately recognised the @jimmac laugh in the background. read the beginning of this thread and yep. 😂

@tbernard LineageOS' stock web browser actually does the same thing, but obviously it's still android so it has the same multitasking model besides that (no grouping)

@tbernard @jimmac I love my Palm Pre! I owned one!!! Sadly, would only work in US and moving abroad had to sell it. Way ahead of it’s time!

@tbernard @jimmac *crying* Never forget what they took from you!
If we could get Gnome on a nice open, semi-nippy, affordable device like this that'd be jolly nice.

@tbernard @jimmac I knew they copied webOS 3.0 for gnome 3, I just knew it! and it looks like the pre+ you have there only has webOS 1 and afaik card stacks are a webOS 2 feature

@tbernard @jimmac you might be able to use the webOS doctor to upgrade the version

@tbernard @jimmac though i will say, gnome 3 did NOT use webOS well, you can't port something to a new form factor directly and have it work well, you need to reinterpret it for whatever you're doing, break apart the UX into its base components and see what works well.

Top menu bar? works great on desktops!

fullscreen app chooser/just type? that needs a context switch meaning flow state is interrupted. Put it in an overhead panel or such like Plasma did and it's easier.

Overview and workspaces? that transition makes flow much better and people seem to love the gnome workspaces! keep it!

@tbernard @jimmac My non-hot take is that I don't mind today's phone sizes, I like not feeling claustrophobic when viewing content on my display.

@tbernard @jimmac here’s some more prototype history: the TouchPad Go and WindsorNot. I should’ve taken a picture of them next to a normal sized TouchPad. Attached is a screenshot from a YouTuber that checked them out.

@tbernard @jimmac so smooth, even on such old hardware (and so many things Apple stole… Cupertino, start your photocopiers)! 😄
