My undergraduate degree in England, completed in 1972, was completely free. Not just tuition but a livable grant for food, rent, books and incidentals. The university charged tuition but my town's Education Authority paid it and the grant. For one UG degree only. No loans involved. There's no reason we can't return to that system. |

University tuition was mostly or almost free until the 1970s
