@JesseSkinner @Pineywoozle @michaelcoyote I don’t know why they decided to make their own protocol, but if anybody asks me, I’ll just tell them. The Fediverse is the last, and I really do mean last, social media network I will ever use. The platform might change. I might try Friendica. I maybe will open another Bookwyrm account. I might move over to go to Social permanently. I might try Write Freely again but if the platform isn’t using activity pub or an RSS feed, I just will not try it. I will never make a native account on blue sky. My account can be bridged over there and when they do shut down third-party access, the audience I’ve cultivated over here isn’t lost

^– is part of why. ATproto is designed so you can try all sorts of different front ends with your data. Your data stays in the one place, easily self hosted, and you can store and use data from multiple different services in the one place.
It’s a two year old protocol that’s been designed so that it can go on even if the company fails in five years. There are already multiple plans for the rest of the stack to be implemented outside of the company that is Bluesky. Once they’re up they’ll be able to interoperate far better than APub instances currently do with each other.
