Bluesky is the Microsoft Word of social media, which I mean in the derogatory sense, as the fediverse is the LaTeX of social media, which I also mean in the derogatory sense

@liamvhogan I think this all aligns with the fact that Facebook remains the Facebook of social media.

Brad

@mike @liamvhogan I doubled back on “aligns” and started looking for the LaTeX joke I must’ve missed.

Julie Clutterbuck

@timrichards @liamvhogan ugh one of the first lessons of latex is careful about your google searches

Thermite Be Giants

@julie @timrichards @liamvhogan sits alongside GIMP in the “software that would have wider adoption if it didn’t have such a stupid name” stakes

ShadSterling

@julie @timrichards @liamvhogan one of my classmates was using LaTeX for their homework and needed to use the card suit symbols, so searched for “latex suits”

… while sitting in the front row of class

@ShadSterling @julie @timrichards @liamvhogan Back in 2005, when writing up my master thesis, in the lab, I needed a function for "substrings".

Just before I started my teacher training I had a short placement in a primary school. During a history lesson on Queen Victoria the teacher did an image search for "Prince Albert" on the interactive whiteboard. Safesearch was off.

@martinpallmann
I will never forget that teacher's face, his double-take, and how he ripped the VGA cable out of the back of the computer.

Cattz :autism:

@ShadSterling @julie @timrichards @liamvhogan and that's how you managed to get an anecdote for life 😅

Boo Ramsey 🧛🏻‍♂️🧟‍♂️👻🎃

@timrichards @liamvhogan It’s as boring as it sounds. 🤣

Unless you’re an academic who likes to typeset their own papers for publication. Then, it’s amazing!

Alex

@ramsey @timrichards @liamvhogan LaTeX has always made me think nsfw type uh... imagery.

Benjamin

@ramsey @timrichards @liamvhogan we even write our letters with latex at home. I'll see myself out ;)

@liamvhogan I have reset my internal "days since I last thought about Computer Modern Roman" counter

Put your hand in the hbox, Paul. The box contains badness 10,000. I hold at your neck the Gom Jabbar

@liamvhogan
as someone who loves Fedi and LaTeX, this hurts

(but it’s not necessarily false)

Michael Vilain

@liamvhogan Why do people make a vakrimpta punim (literally "crooked face") whenever I ask "vi or emacs?" You'd think I was asking "boxers or briefs or boxer briefs?"

Anthony Sorace

@liamvhogan @jenn I’m still searching for the troff of social media.

Morpheus Being

@Crow @liamvhogan disagree respectfully. Used for writing teaching, mentor and student learning materials. Swapped to it after loosing so much using Word and having issues with consistency, and having to write 3 separate booklets. Learned some tricks and could produce 3 versions, consistent, print ready, with 1 internal switch! Beat Word easily.

Flaming Cheeto

@liamvhogan is there a WordPerfect 5.1 of social media?

jenbanim

@liamvhogan Twitter is the Open Office of social media. Was cool for a time, but now it only exists because its users haven't realized there's a better option

Harshal Suryawanshi 🇮🇳

@liamvhogan
Used to use LaTeX for documentation. Now I use Typst. Seems a bit saner than LaTeX.

Michael Szell

@liamvhogan Where do I find the typst of social media?

Sky, Cozy Goth Prince of Cats

@liamvhogan this offends me

...because I would love to be able to use LaTeX formatting on Fedi.

Ergative Absolutive

@skysailor @liamvhogan I think there are instances that have implemented that. Mathy instances.

なままめ

Totally agree. But still, I’d prefer the fediverse just like my preference towards LaTeX over MS Word (x

Linda Woodrow

@liamvhogan I was today years old when I found out about LaTex. :(

Farbs

@liamvhogan Probs ought to go back to .plan files then, so we can each use our editor of choice.

@liamvhogan Actually, \TeX, with a χ, and \LaTeX are quite different. \TeX, developed by Donald Knuth in the 1970s, is a typesetting system—think of it as the very core, a low-level program focused on beautiful, precise typesetting. \LaTeX, (and others such as ConTeXt and JadeTeX) on the other hand, is a set of macros built on top of \TeX to make it more user-friendly. So, when you talk about \LaTeX in a derogatory sense, you're probably thinking of \TeX.

Which I mean in a fediverse sense.

@liamvhogan I just want the markdown of social media. What would that be, everyone hand-craft their own RSS feeds?

Simon π man ⚛️🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇦

@thomasjwebb
And use a modem to transmit it to their friends, who might in turn transmit it to their friends... That would be Usenet and uucp. Now those were the days. RIP Usenet, like by the binary groups, advertising, porn, and spam.
@liamvhogan

wbpeckham

@liamvhogan Okay, I kinda love and hate what you did there all at the same time. But I kind of take exception to the comparison: Word is a word processor that sucks but does the job. LaTex is a type setting program, which does that job quite well, but it sucks as a word processor. You're kind of comparing oranges and Buicks. (or something involving fruit and expensive vehicles). Having seen social media since before the internet I have to say I love the fedverse for everything it is not!

George Girton

@liamvhogan derogatory is good, which I mean in a bad sense. That’s bad! (Which I mean, in a good sense)🍸😼

Lee 🏖️

@liamvhogan
As someone who has to know Word for work but has chosen to use LaTeX in the past for submission of essays, this is hilarious to me 😆

Cegorach

@liamvhogan okay, so if the fediverse is LaTeX, can Mastodon finally get some even remotely usable formatting?

(missing the point on purpose)

kami_kadse

@drazraeltod @liamvhogan

badness 10000 has occurred while output is active

Frederik Elwert

@liamvhogan This is really the best take and I think nothing needs to be added.

Sigma

@liamvhogan@aus.social Now I’m wondering: What’s the InDesign of social media?

Dr Ro Smith

@liamvhogan accurate. Would you mind if I screenshotted this and shared it on Tumblr? I'm curious what Tumblr is an analog for.

laalsaas

@liamvhogan what's the typst of social media then?

Henrik SchĂśnemann

@liamvhogan I just laughed so much! That's the perfect toot! :D

Gratian

@liamvhogan 🤣 😂 🤣 Do Linkedin next! What is linkedin?

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@liamvhogan this is by far the most accurate comparison I've seen so far.

Tom Walker

@liamvhogan Threads is Google Docs on a broken Chromebook

The1goit #RedInstead

@liamvhogan fun fact that isn't actually fun: some software like misskey and I think akkoma actually support LaTeX formatting in posts.

pera

@liamvhogan this is quite accurate considering there are Mastodon instances that support LaTeX rendering thanks to @christianp 's fork :3

Matt Campbell

@liamvhogan Do we still need the Markdown or AsciiDoc of social media, then?

ferricoxide

@liamvhogan@aus.social

Fedi is work and what you put in looks nothing like what you get out?

Ausir

@liamvhogan is Facebook the Google Docs of social media?

yuyu

@liamvhogan which one is the typst of social media?

Lauren P. Burka

@liamvhogan So, where does Scrivener fit in? It was supposed to be LaTeX with a gui.

DanSmithCreates

@liamvhogan
Mastodon - Linux Desktop of microposts
Threads - Windows Vista
Bluesky - macOS Sequoia

Alessandro Corazza

@liamvhogan social media is the Microsoft Word of interpersonal communication

Netux

@liamvhogan in thinking not derogatory enough. I think we are in straight TeX mode here.

meehawl

@liamvhogan Finally all those long hours geeking out have paid off!

gormster

@liamvhogan twitter in this case is I guess WordPerfect, which imploded under the weight of catastrophic mismanagement yet mysteriously limps on to this day

Rachel Rawlings

@liamvhogan No lies detected, but I guess I'd be better at LaTeX than I've ever suspected.

Josh Justice

@liamvhogan maybe IndieWeb microformats are the XSLT

veer66

@liamvhogan it was painful to create Thai document in LaTeX. I think Fediverse is better than that.

183231bcb

@liamvhogan@aus.social What's the Gemtext of social media?

(Presumably a gemini-native comment system?)

pilosophos

@liamvhogan what's the Notepad of social media I wonder?

DHeadshot's Alt

@liamvhogan
Is Usenet the EMACS of social media (because of the copying thing) or the Ex (because of the learning curve)?
