say NO to 2024! no more years! #EndDates

• every year is worse than the last
• "being on time" is neuronormative and ableist
• date/time math is inconsistent and annoying
• "number goes up" is unsustainable
• "see you in a bit" is just fine
• nobody ever knows what day it is so let's just stop pretending
• buses don't run on "time", they show up when you light a cigarette
• deadlines were invented by capitalists
• global south forced to winter during summer
• time is an illusion and calendar isn't real - we made it up!

we can do better!

nobody's gonna listen to the truth, so happy new year, I guess 🙄

@lina They have played us for absolute fools.

@lina
as someone who has on more than one occasion summoned a bus they were waiting for with the lighting of a cigarette: agreed.
Also: makes me think busses are small deities or demons?

(I know the Saints / small gods in Central America will accept tobacco as an offering)

holothuroid

@fritzoids There are sociologist takes that treat institutions and gods as basically the same thing. That would make public transport a deity.

I think this one is generally more responsive to proper infrastructure budgetting, union-negotiated salaries and ease of access but a cigarette surely won't hurt.

@holothuroid

ah, I like your take.
I'm going to support better budgeting (I think the bus and metro drivers where I live are already unionized) and better tickets for everyone (I want the 9€ Deutschlandticket back! google it! it was glorious!).
But I will treat drivers like minor deities that want respect and maybe a cigarette but one might still want to be careful around them.

@lina And ... I want all that daylight I've saved since I was a small boy and I want it NOW!

Annelies Kamran

@AlgoCompSynth @lina yes!!! Furthermore, remember having to go to bed when it was still light out? Where is that light now when I need it?!?

Jody Lemoine 🇨🇦

@AlgoCompSynth @lina No daylight was ever saved. It was just moved to morning and we slept through it. If it was that important to us, we should have skipped the snooze button. 🙂

@lina i mean i unironically agree. the rest of the world besides europe got along just fine for forever without strict timekeeping. when planning meetups nowadays i usually don't specify exact locations or times 'directly' and its funny seeing how ppl react

Irenes (many)

@alexing @lina time is a thing humans invented to stress ourselves out

(or at least, that's how we enjoy characterizing the often-repeated story about commerce and stuff)

alexing

@irenes @lina europeans* invented and put in other places (not everywhere)

Moth

@alexing @lina I would agree but man I need those standardized dates for programming.

(On a serious note, I don't think standardized timekeeping is really the issue, time stresses me out but it's more the expectations and the passing of the day itself, if standardized timekeeping wasn't a thing those would still stress me out)

@lina Calendar causes me unceasing anxiety while Not Calendar never has, you speak nothing but truth!!

Word of Mouth

@lina@neuromatch.social Agreed on all points. We should adopt universal time. Everyone uses UTC, all the time, everywhere. For me, dawn is like 12 PM so what? It is what it is. The sun rises whenever it rises. No need to reset all the clocks FFS.

Also, we should get rid of the letter "C".

@lina It is March 1,402, 2020 where I live.

@lina @hugo i am completely in support of a spiral-based, nature-cycle-oriented language of time. the word "time" would probably not exist, people would instead use words that refer to specific times of year, times of day, etc. (sorry i live in the forest and everything is a cycle here.)

Moth

@mk30 @lina @hugo Isn't...that sort of already the current language of time, though?

mk30

@MothWaves @lina @hugo minus the abstraction of clock time.

@lina Is the guy on reddit who got stuck in 2018 doing well?

Jan Eden

@lina I don't smoke. Without a timetable, I cannot even curse the bus company while waiting forever.

CIMB4

@lina "see you in a bit" can be very stressing tho when waiting for someone. There's nuance to all of this.
Generally tho, can people with their 1.5 ton metal boxes ppease stop "rushing" to be "on time" by risking everyone's safety?

@lina I'm pretty sure deadlines and calendars were invented by not being able to grow stuff in the winter/dry season and having to plan accordingly.
