We don't need to buy a Sun NAS server, we have one at home

The Sun NAS server at home:

@citrus @catsalad I was going to say, that doesn't look much like a Ferrari of NAS solutions... 😁

mike805

@catsalad Given that you can buy 1TB Micro SD cards now, why doesn't someone make a RAID system out of them?

embix

@catsalad We also don't need Kubernetes, as we have Containers at home.

@catsalad „how do you install it?“ – „Sunny side up.“

Tom Brand

@catsalad I did the same thing with USB Zip drives when I was in college. (The NAS failed quite frequently.)

Greg

@catsalad I had one of those very USB drives as conference swag. They were so cheap they were almost lighter than air.

@catsalad sadly I cannot find the video anymore where the picture is from. It's one of my most loved YouTube classics. ❤️

mbpaz

@catsalad and it doesn't need the damned sun storagetek management software that has now evaporated

Richard Bairwell

@catsalad Scary thing is I spent several years in the early 2000s working on a Sun NAS: about 8ft tall, 3ft deep and 12ft long and stored a massive 3Tb...Which is what that zip tied USB monstrosity probably can handle in the size of the SCSI connectors that had to be used.

@rbairwell @catsalad
That sounds very similar to the IBM Dolphin I bought in 1999 for Capital Radio. Had to put it in the basement because it was too heavy to sit anywhere else.

dark_stang

@catsalad you've got a whole 6 free bays in there

Miles Fidelman

@catsalad perhaps a few details - I keep thinking about building a cluster from old cell phones & memory sticks, wondering what it is that you've assembled there - hardware, software, etc!

Stu

@catsalad Not going to lie, I quite like the look of that Ferrari laptop.

Renato Ramonda

@tehstu IIRC that model had the sound of a Ferrari engine revving as the BIOS power up sound.

Very classy.

Stu

@renatoram haha, nice. I have the special edition Forza 6 Xbox One which does the same.

Viral Obscurity

@catsalad coming soon on Linus Tech Tips

"I built a 2 PB production server from USB sticks, some string, and cello tape"

This is so cursed

Dominik

@catsalad Wow, that throws me back in time when I was a junior sysadmin at my first job.

GhostOnTheHalfShell

@catsalad

It’s a little spooky to think you can buy computer on a chip something like a raspberry pi was more power than the old sun works stations, or rack mounted units

Kevin Karhan :verified:

@catsalad way faster, more reliable, energy saving and of higher capacity than the 3,5" #Floppy #RAID that @ActionRetro once did.

wayde

@catsalad surely the ferrari laptop makes it faster too????

Neko :ablobcatcoffee:

@catsalad I have unironically always wanted to do something like this.
