@kagihq what service do you actually use for translation?

Kagi HQ

@michael It uses a combination of LLMs, selecting the best output.

Michael

@kagihq lol. Using LLMs for a translation service.

Tbf, I have been doing it from time to time and it does yield very good result. It keeps the tone of your text much more easily for example

I tried a few English->Ukrainian translations and they look good, but how do you do it? How do you do better than Google & DeepL?

Well that’s cool. I wonder how it decides which translation is best. I use Google Translate every day for Ukrainian, French, Turkish, Polish, and Japanese. But no longer!

@kagihq This looks neat, I assume the inability to translate paywalled pages is to protect Kagi from being sued by someone like the New York Times mistaking the translation engine for an AI scraper bot (or deciding that they don't want their articles translated for whatever nonsensical reason related to intellectual property they come up with)?

Anyway, I don't use almost any paywalled content, so this looks like it may be useful to me.

@kagihq You should have made it so I can easily test-translate this blog post into the supported languages :)

@kagihq The cache seems to work against you here because the added link is not in the translation, but I'm bike-shedding here :) Thanks for the translate feature, it's a great addition !

FYI I'm a massive user of the e.g. !fren and !enfr bang for quick translations, so it may be interesting to go through these to update them to use Kagi instead

@kagihq Awesome. Doesn’t recognize that I’m logged in, but translation looks pretty good.

@kagihq I noticed it's possible to do translation via query parameters:

- `source=` source language
- `target=` target language
- `text=` input text

E.g.: `source=auto&target=en&text=agua+de+calcetín`

translate.kagi.com/?source=aut

Kagi, is this documented anywhere?

PictoPulse356

@kagihq Is it any extension available to use it directly through the browser?

Thibault Molleman🇧🇪 🌈🐝

@PictoPulse356
There is a JavaScript bookmarklet listed on the translate page that you can temporarily use
@kagihq

PictoPulse356

@thibaultmol @kagihq Not sure how to use that, so I guess that I Wil wait for the extension 😊

Thibault Molleman🇧🇪 🌈🐝

@PictoPulse356 @kagihq you see the link on the translate page at the bottom where it mentions the bookmarklet.

If you're on desktop, you want to drag that link to your bookmark bar and then once you're on a page that you want to translate you can click it.

If you're on mobile you have to long press the link and add it to your bookmarks

@kagihq can't believe how much good stuff you're putting out given the size of your company... 🤯

neongod

@kagihq I tried it with two short sentences within a minute and got ‘Rate exceeded’ for the second try.

Christian

@kagihq Sounds promising. Do you have plans for an API?
