Welcome, welcome, WELCOME to Mastodon Hour!!! This was first announced on fsf.org/blogs/community/flock- and is our very first time hosting such an event. During this time, you may communicate via reply to our toots, mention us in a new thread, or direct message, and we will be available to respond in real-time.

For this first Mastodon Hour, the main topic will be "Help others find their reason to support free software." This is the theme of our spring fundraiser, which is going on now. Our secondary topic will be "decentralization and federation," and what better place to discuss this than on a decentralized service such as Mastodon!

Free Software Foundation

Also, do you know anyone who is "on the freedom ladder" who you would like to introduce? They can either be people you know personally or not, even just someone you know who is creating or sharing resources relevant to educating people about free software, no matter how simple or complex. We are interested to know!!!

f you don't know how to start, you can try replying to this thread. (It's a first time for us, too, so we will be playing it by ear together.

murph

@fsf Just a hint for next time: If you tag the posts for an event like this, people can follow the tags as to not miss any of the dialog #fsf #mastdonhour (suggestions)

Free Software Foundation

@murph Good point. Sometimes I (blame me, Devin U, if you want to name names) either 1) gets lazy or 2) runs out of space. I will try to keep it more consistent next time.

a8o

@fsf My first attempt to reply to this thread. Successful (y / n)?

a8o

@fsf Thank you fsf.
What's the next step?

iShareFreedom

@fsf @a8o Are you using the CLI client to reply the messages?

a8o

@fsf Is there another fsf-sponsored mastodon gathering in the works?

Free Software Foundation

@a8o We cannot make any promises at the moment (because we are super-duper busy fighting for #UserFreedom ), but it is our hope that we can continue sponsoring events such as these. Thanks for attending and for participating! 🎇

Mycroft AI

@fsf Beyond donations, how can we support free software? #fsf #mimic3

Free Software Foundation

@mycroft_ai Use it; advocate it; refuse to use nonfree software, in every circumstance. A single use of free software benefits the movement; a single refusal to use proprietary software does as well.

Pixelcode 🇺🇦

@fsf Does something like “proprietary licences” exist, like some people claim?

Free Software Foundation

@pixelcode Can you clarify, please? (This article comes to mind, when I read your question: gnu.org/philosophy/categories.)

Pixelcode 🇺🇦

@fsf The article says that “proprietary software is another name for nonfree software” – is the same true for licences?

DELETED

@fsf this to me is when the fsf really is at its best, when it is actively engaging with the community.

Oh..... clumsy....

@fsf What is the FSF's stance on Copilot? It is a proprietary SaaS tool and so it is unethical but is there anything the FSF is particularly worried about with it?

Free Software Foundation

@oklomsy Well, there are a few things, but the main issue is that it copies free software code without developers knowing where it is coming from and what license that code was under. I recommend reading RMS's recent "State of the free software movement" talk, which mentions Copilot (he calls it copy-a-lot): libreplanet.org/wiki/LibrePlan (timestamp of [0:38:24]) #Copilot

Oh..... clumsy....

@fsf Copy-a-lot? That's clever. I am gonna call it that instead.

DELETED

@fsf I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact, Fediverse/Mastodon, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Fedi plus Mastodon. Mastodon is not a social network unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Fediverse made useful by the Fedi servers, frontends and vital network components comprising a full social network as defined by ActivityPub.

Blender Dumbass ( J.Y.Amihud )

@fsf How's Richard Stallman? Is he feeling good? Just sort of care a little for the man.

DELETED

@fsf I really enjoyed the last bulletin's piece on the phrase "industry standard" in education.
Pretty much all universities in the United States are bad about forcing you to use proprietary software under the "industry" guise. When you enroll, the first thing you're told is, "install this, that, the other, don't ask questions; it doesn't matter that it infringes on your freedom because we got a good deal on licenses. What does freedom even mean anyway? Don't you want to get hired?"

@fsf sorry to have missed this. Do you have any guides on your approach to twitter, "Choqok, KDE's microblogging client, Nitter, a free front-end mirror to Twitter, and Nitter's RSS feed feature," so that other free software companies can do the same?
