In re: some conversations I've had in other places (real and online)

A lot of people in leftist circles seem to begin conversations on step 8 and are surprised when the person they're talking to isn't receptive.

Ya gotta start on step 1.

@TechConnectify Amen to this.

And presupposing you got the first 7 right, that they're obvious plain truths, too. They're not.

There's a whole host of good people out there who - believe it or not! - are still using cold war vocabulary. They have not read the theory and whipping out "capitalism bad" freaks them the fuck out.

They usually want the same thing as you do, but it's your job to help them see it. And it starts with meeting them where they're at. Step 1.

@TechConnectify I read an interesting article that basically says look, authoritarians are concerned about preserving "us" versus "them" and the way to tackle things is to expand "us" to include "them"

@TechConnectify This is why I appreciate it every time you mention how refrigeration works

@TechConnectify
Well said.
Not to mention that no ones mind if being changed by being told they're a bad person.

They need to be met we're they're at and engaged with, with empathy and understanding.

@TechConnectify
There's also a frustrating expectation that people can materialise their own critical thinking abilities and their own re-education.

@TechConnectify Documentation needs to aimed at anyone who might need to perform a specific task, regardless of who they might be or their experience level in any particular field.

@TechConnectify This.

Although going from step 1 to step 8 is so tiring because we have to thrust our way through decades, and even centuries of bullshit narrative and capitalist propaganda which is, I would say, very not easy thing to do. Breaking somebody out of the Matrix built by the armies of think tanks, market research and advertisement companies requires uprooting one's whole worldview, almost. It's energy- and time-consuming, for both parties, and most of us don't have that. So we, understandably, hide behind "it is not my job to educate you" mantra.

@drq @TechConnectify Write it down once and point people to it so you don't have to personally do it over and over again.

Dr. Quadragon ❌

@zdl it's already been all written down. Guess what, nobody fucking cares. People have all attention span of a ferret and are only receptive when you explain things in person. Much worse if the thing explained challenges everything they've been told since birth.

@drq @TechConnectify You can continue going on, then, with approaches that we have continued visible evidence don't work at all.

"Vote Remain or you're a racist!" Brexit wins. "Vote Hilary or you're a racist!" Trump wins. "Vote Kamala or you're a racist!" Trump wins.

If the approach you're using is consistently failing IT'S FUCKING TIME TO FUCKING USE A FUCKING NEW FUCKING APPROACH!

But hey, I don't actually give a shit. Not something I can change. Not something I have to live in.

Dr. Quadragon ❌

@zdl Telling somebody "go read a book on the history of political economics" is not really a new approach.
