i know this has been said and will be said no fewer than infinitely many times forever, but i do wonder how much of an effect twitter/X had when something like a third of all people in the US access basic information about the world via a platform bought and solely owned by a billionaire for the explicit purpose of advancing fascism.

we thought surveillance capitalism was bad before but i imagine we are in for a different kind of adversary when infocapitalists go mask off in lockstep with an avowedly fascist government

What happens when a site used for essential information access by 1/3 of people in the US is solely owned by a billionaire with the express purpose of furthering fascism like twitter/X? Above that, what happens when what's seen as the basic means of accessing information of any kind has been choked down to an opaque LLM infobox that might as well be from God, and an avowedly fascist government tells you that it gets to precondition all outputs? Fuck data brokers and location data, what happens when the NSA and its infinite supply of 0days is tasked with bagging everyone who's been to a protest since smartphones existed?

all the off-record conversations i have had with people who have any amount of access to any of the backend systems of gigantic data conglomerates always reach a point where they say "you can't imagine what else we're doing with the data and i can't say any more" and i think we're about to see what happens when that capability gets fully weaponized by the state. For now, we simply can't have any idea.
