less keynote & powerpoint
more funky custom one-of-a-kind presentation setups

do it in emacs org-mode
do it in ms paint
do it with a document camera
do it in a browser: every slide a tab
do it in a terminal: cat slide1; cat slide2

make it how it's easiest to make it
screw "professional"
don't polish the slides; polish the talk

let the good be the enemy of the perfect

@rntz i mean yeah but also do practice the setup very thoroughly. when you’re anxious about the tech not working according to plan it’s very hard to give a good talk (i know from extensive personal experience)

rntz

@chrisamaphone yes. practicing the talk/setup a bunch is both necessary to make this approach work and also good for the talk because practice is good.

@rntz i am therefore gunshy about using anything too weird and custom and nonstandard because if it breaks I probably can’t just use someone else’s device. my approach is more “put as little technology on the critical path to a functioning presentation as possible”

@chrisamaphone I think I'm not quite as gunshy as you, but if I do have a related practice: if my talk involves a live demo & I'm not confident it's gremlin-free, I screen-record a video as backup.

@chrisamaphone this has proved very useful for giving talks years later when stuff has bitrotted or changed, or I've simply lost practice...

@rntz When I actively polish slides it's either because I'm showing a bunch of something weird (and want to keep the font size up) or because I'm walking through a bunch of related stuff and want to keep breadcrumbs for other concepts in place - I've got what some people would consider one animated slide and some would've written as one slide in significantly smaller text that does that in my MSFP2020 talk, for example (think I showed you that one?)

@rntz hey, maybe I do overuse keynote but it's better than beamer

oh no, I'll have to learn Polish but at least the slides could be in a language I'm more familiar with
