@cstross My dad's mother was raised Catholic and was Catholic by belief until the day she died. But, her parents were Jews who escaped eastern Europe around the same time as your clan. They hid their beliefs, even from their daughter for most of her life, because they were afraid of persecution. Technically, because Judaism is matrilineal, my dad counts as Jewish, at least enough for his current wife's family to accept.
The depressing thing about this US election isn't the fascist running for president, it's that that fascist has close to 50% support. Sure, a lot of his supporters are straight white men. But, my guess is that a significant minority of his supporters would never pass the fascist purity tests. They're members of the Leopards Eating People's Faces party, and in for a big surprise if he wins.
