@Gargron Yeah. And it's all depicted, it's referenced in throwaway little remarks, it's even used thematically, but it's never explained or addressed directly.

It's really clever worldbuilding, in that you don't need to know it at all to enjoy everything, but once you find it out, it makes perfect sense.
