How to turn the new Mac mini on/off.

This is not a joke. I repeat, I’m not joking

A comic with four panels:
1. Mac mini standing on a desk
2. One hand pulls it 30° sideways
3. Second hand finds power button on the bottom of it
4. Official 3D model of Mac mini, view from the bottom, power button circled

@nikitonsky can I ask where you got that 3D model from?

Pink

@nikitonsky Thanks! I was looking for that but couldn't find it. Guess I wasn't using the correct browser.

maunzerl

@nikitonsky Guess they don't want you to turn it off ever. The heatsink fan bothers me way more actually. I think hot air is supposed to flow upwards...

2xfo

@maunzCache @nikitonsky

This is a simple fix, they just put the feet on top by accident

demofox

@maunzCache @nikitonsky that's what big physics wants you to think. We need fans to push hot air down, where it's meant to go. Fight entropy!

danielkrah

@maunzCache @nikitonsky Actually this design makes sense.
If you mount the mini behind your monitor the air will be blown upwards.

Jacob Andersen

@maunzCache @nikitonsky Sure, left to its own devices it will. But that effect is pretty minor when faced with a fan. Even a slow moving one.

*

@nikitonsky my first thought upon seeing this was that it's not meant to be turned off, but maybe it's not meant to be turned on at all

Refurio Anachro

Or maybe it's meant to be turned over! I heard there's a also new special font with upside-down letters, so you can do this with your screen, too. You'll need an apple pocket mirror adapter, though. The adapter has been a blast¹ in apple management circles...

Thibault Molleman🇧🇪 🌈🐝

@nikitonsky I love how they pat themselves on the back for putting two usb-c ports at the front for easy access.......

but then they do this

disky

@thibaultmol @nikitonsky You know they're quietly seething and gnashing teeth about those disgusting ports that mar their lovely brushed aluminum finish

lainoid the omniscient
@nikitonsky who turns their computer off? Is this a post from the year 2000?
Jiub :verifiedenby: :verifiedtrans: :verified_estrogen:

@nikitonsky lmao this looks like something from the onion. apple design is so overrated. they could have easily but the button on the back with the ports if they didn't want to have it on the front

(roll m3tti)

@nikitonsky yeah sure lets maybe add the power cord into the bottom. You know with the idesk that has an integrated hole in it. Who is doing the design lately for them?

Meowski's Catgirl Grooming Service
@nikitonsky yea they want you to leave it on all the time so they can spy on you
Mighty Orbot

@nikitonsky Or just click the Apple menu icon -> Shut Down in the OS to do it safely. I assume they just didn’t want anyone to hit this button by accident.

Niki Tonsky

@mighty_orbot wouldn’t you want to turn it back on at some point?

Mighty Orbot

@nikitonsky On my MacBook, the TouchID key in the top-right corner turns on the computer. I’d assume the keyboard for this Mac Mini does the same.

Of course, most people never turn their computer on/off anymore unless they’re transporting it, so it’s kind of a minor issue anyway.

Paul_IPv6

@nikitonsky

ah, another great UI/UX decision from the genius that put the charging port for the mouse on the bottom?

SMDH

SunDancer

@nikitonsky Here I was, thinking putting the charging port under the mouse was peak stupid....

Blake Leonard

@SunDancer @nikitonsky no that's most definitely still worse than "stick your finger under it to press a button you'll seldom use"

Blake Leonard

@nikitonsky This is actually quite clever, you're not gonna press it by accident. Kinda like how TVs nowadays put the power button on the underside instead of on the front. (Although maybe, as a hint, they should put a power icon/LED near the bottom edge on the front face.)

basisbit 🦈🇪🇺🇺🇦

@nikitonsky most people will only press that button like 2 times a year or so. It is a Mac after all. I guess the only reason for it still being there is to be able to hard-reset / hard-reboot in case of hardware / driver issues.

Jargoggles

@nikitonsky
The number of times my cat has turned off my NAS box because the power button is readily accessible is too damn high. I've had to reorient it to make it more difficult for him.

This would actually be helpful for me.

Jer Warren

@nikitonsky I'm starting to think maybe Nathan Fielder has spent a decade infiltrating Apple's design department

DELETED

@nikitonsky it needs a visual indicator pointing at the corner where the power button is, but other than that it’s actually a pretty good design

Phil Thane ✅

@nikitonsky
Can't have a power switch spoiling the pure minimalism of the design.
@lisamelton

ティージェーグレェ

@nikitonsky Yeah, Apple apparently finally updated their Magic Mouse to use USB-C, but still kept the plug on the bottom of the mouse for recharging?

They've got some braindead hardware designers.

ティージェーグレェ

@jazaval I'd probably put the USB-C port in the "front" so it would look and act like a wired mouse when charging?

(image of another mouse with a cable protruding out of what I would consider the "front" for illustrative purposes)

Image of a wired mouse.
ティージェーグレェ

@jazaval Apple just always has to be unnecessarily "different" apparently (I am harping on how their ads seemed to admonish the adverbial form in English, so instead of "Think Differently" their ads read "Think Different").

I knew Bill English (the inventor of the mouse) personally. He more or less pioneered the field of ergonomics.

As @hyc reminded someone else on the FediVerse recently, the mouse was not the be all end all of pointing devices here:
mastodon.social/@hyc/113386894

Yet, for the time (the 1960s) the mouse was more or less an improvement on the light pen. People's arms would often drain of blood/go numb using light pens.

What is maybe not discussed much is, Bill English/SRI didn't just try the mouse. They experimented with a variety of pointing devices. One was even knee based (the idea being you could point using your knee/legs and free up both hands for typing and chording [they had a chorded keyset in addition to QWERTY keyboards which was favored for many NLS [oNLine System] applications).

They experimented with mice with 5 buttons, mice with no buttons. Via usability studies they eventually settled on a mouse with three buttons as being the most pragmatic with a good balance of ease of use and offering some more sophisticated functionality without being overwhelming to users.

Steve Jobs?

He threw out ALL of that prior research and insisted on one button mice with the Macintosh.

More likely: he was unaware of that research and was just trying to make the thing as simple as possible because of his reality distortion field?

:rainbow_heart: Pandora

@nikitonsky I kinda get the idea of doing this, actually. You don't really need to turn it on and off that often.

That said, it's a really really inconvenient place to put it.

Reiddragon :ablobcatattention:

@nikitonsky the worst part is this isn’t the first time Apple has a brain dead design, yet mfs will keep acting like Apple is this genius innovator company that revolutionizes the tech world every two years

schamspeare

@nikitonsky At least customers still have control over it. I'm sure that choice will be taken out of our hands on the next one.

Between their products and their lovey-dovey, lifestyle tv programs, Apple is reminding me more and more of the villainous corporations in sci-fi novels.

da_kink

@nikitonsky from the company that put the charging port on the bottom of a mouse, I expect nothing less.

Next time you'll need a screwdriver because it's on the inside.

nicolas ⁂

@nikitonsky I have the Mac Studio at work turned 90 degrees on the desk just to be able to easily turn it on and off as they hid the button in the back and it's hard to find. This is next level, very much in continuity to their mouse charger and the iMacs you had to pull towards you and rotate every day all the times you wanted to plug anything or use the SD reader. For the Mini, anything that would prevent to use it flipped upside down? I'd do that if I had one I think.

Anke

@nikitonsky I guess that might be a feture rather than a bug if you have a cat or a little kid with a habit of pushing buttons?

John Lenin 🇵🇸

@nikitonsky The usual suspects will declare this the most genius design move ever. 🤣

C.Suthorn :prn:

@nikitonsky

First unplug usbc, hdmi, lan and power, then ...

magggus

@nikitonsky and they will tell me it is better for mother earth to waste energy in standby mode

bEA 🔓

@nikitonsky I last rebooted my mac mini over 2 months ago. I don't know when I last used the power button. I think I'm going to pull through.

Harshad Sharma

@nikitonsky great! If I upgrade, I'll finally have to automate shutting off my workstation when the sun hasn't been out for days during monsoons. Not going to take the machine out of the shelf where it is screwed tight to prevent my many cats introducing it to joys of gravity.

Christian Gudrian

@nikitonsky We can count ourselves lucky that the USB ports are at the front…

Avid Presto

@nikitonsky It's the design at Apple that keeps me coming back.

Leonid

@nikitonsky could be worse. Could be the power cable at the bottom.

OG Gay Geek

@nikitonsky Super convenient if its in a rackmount </s>

F4GRX Sébastien

@nikitonsky good way to avoid accidental turnoffs btw. This happens more often that I'm comfortable to admit.

mos_8502 :verified:

@f4grx @nikitonsky Also, you can just turn it off, or put it to sleep, with the relevant Apple menu item.

furicle

@nikitonsky somebody should tell the Mac mini team that buttons are a feature again, according to all the iPhone ads.

They're still on last generations marketing decisions.

Anthony, of course

@nikitonsky presumably most people will power it on from the keyboard and off via the OS?

Val

@nikitonsky the genius engineers at apple designing a spill-resistant power button - just put little feet on the bottom and the water will never reach it!

Xipher

@nikitonsky not to mention that the new Magic Mouse that was just 'refreshed' this year somehow also still has the charging port /on the bottom of the mouse/.... what? All they did was change it to USB-C

re_chief

@nikitonsky lol, glad I got the M2 then, I guess. At least I can turn it off without fully taking it out of my desk shelving

@nikitonsky I'm waiting for a device that turns off just by blowing a fart.

@hipsauerkraut @nikitonsky Introducing the revolutionary “Ass Clapper” touch free power button control!

Michael

@nikitonsky @Bachus At least it’s not one of those inline flip switches on the powercord.

AliveDevil

@nikitonsky
That's been a whole lot of varnish the product designers at Apple consumed.

Or they don't think that anyone would turn the mac Mini on anymore … i.e. my m1 mini is running … all the time.

@mvsde

Mark Reeves

@nikitonsky I shut my 2018 model down every evening. It's under a monitor stand and so I have to reach through and push the button on the back in the morning. That's bad enough, but doable. This is not doable.

I don't know that I'll buy another mac at this point.

Frost, Wolffucker 🐺:therian:

@nikitonsky If they wanted to be Cool And Futuristic they could have just had a power touchbutton, like early PS3s (ours is a slim with physical buttons though)!

Henry

@nikitonsky So does that mean you need two left hands, or a friend, to turn it on?

Michael Cook

@nikitonsky Are those two left hands?

They are aren’t they.

This doesn’t seem so horrible to me. It’s odd, sure. But I only have left hand so…

BurgersMcSlopshot

@nikitonsky slap some rubber or felt pads on the top and run it upside-down

IllTemperedCaviar

@nikitonsky That pretty bad, but I still say this holds the record for the worst design decision ever made by apple.

Picture of an Apple Magic Mouse, tilted on its side with the charging cable plugged into the port on the bottom.
David Croyle

@cswalker21 @nikitonsky Agreed 100%. So dumb. Although this new one shows they refuse to learn that lesson and that they prioritize their manufacturing convenience over that of users.

Michael Porter

@cswalker21 @nikitonsky Ever use one of these? I did, once, and I never wanted to again.

Apple’s “puck” mouse, from the original iMac. The mouse has a usb cable coming out of the top, like any regular wired mouse. The shape of the mouse is circular. There is an oval button at the top, near the cord, and the plastic is two-tone, but not two-textured, so it is very difficult to get a sense of orientation when holding the mouse.
The Turtle

@nikitonsky the release of the new Mini inspired me to buy a Mini.

A refurbed 2018 model.

$110, shipped.

shine

@nikitonsky I wonder if the power cord connects to the bottom side as well

Fred Brooker

@nikitonsky I've asked a friend and he didn't turned off his work Mac like for last two years

qevlarr

@nikitonsky you can buy a Bluetooth on/off button that you can put anywhere you want for only $50

Akeem :xenia_laptop:
@nikitonsky Well, it sure won't harm it but... why...
I guess pressing button on the side may cause too much sliding of the pc, but why not making a button at the top

@nikitonsky :kekw: attention is now the most valuable thing so everything has to be just a little bit stupid so people will talk about it

@nikitonsky So you stick a finger up its bum. I think that works for chickens too.

@nikitonsky I am also turned off by having one person tip me over while someone else sticks a finger up there.

@nikitonsky The "harpooned turtle" charging method for mice has a new pointlessly clumsy power management partner.

quux

@nikitonsky If Google is the “engineering” company, then Apple is the “anti-engineering” company, which one do you prefer?

lil5 :golang: 🌱

@quux @nikitonsky can we have a company that ship products that don’t suck instead?

Kevin Bauer

@nikitonsky this is the most Apple thing ever. The only way it could be more Apple is if you also have the option to pay an extra $200 for a model with the power button on the top/side.

EcksDy

@dgoosens @nikitonsky @nixCraft
They'd probably put the charging port under the car

erik

@nikitonsky I don't know where else you expect them to put it. Unless, I guess, you're the kind of person who doesn't despise the mere sight of a button.

wakame

@nikitonsky

I don't see the problem.

Solo Ham :ablobwobble:

@nikitonsky

I see they found their moto back from the magic mice.

Josh Renaud

@nikitonsky Did they do away with the Apple menu > Shut Down command?

Isn't that the way most people power off a Mac?

(I only use the physical power button on my Macs in rare cases like a lockup/panic)

Jason Bowen

@nikitonsky Apple's hatred of buttons will never cease to amuse me.

Stormgren

@nikitonsky As if the charging jack for the mouse on the bottom wasn't bad enough!

Mark Pauley

@nikitonsky when’s the last time you’ve turned a computer off by pushing the power button?

Log 🪵

@unsaturated @nikitonsky I like to brush up against it every once in a while, so the 'puter don't start to get no funny ideas.

unusual zone of infecundity
@nikitonsky not that terribly bad tbh... hell, the fact that it's *plainly marked with the power symbol* already puts it above so much other stuff out there 💀

@nikitonsky The answer: At best, you should keep your blockchain full node connected to the internet at all times. You can also mine on your device with a few CPU threads, very easily, with the #Monero GUI wallet. 👍

Chris :blobcat_thisisfine: :tux:

@nikitonsky it took them decades but they finally found a way of hiding the unsightly power button that ruins the user experience for so many people. mine is literally a key on my laptop keyboard, with a light, taunting me constantly. it would be so much better to lift the whole thing up and find some button on the bottom, should i ever want to use it, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

in this post i have been so sarcastic i've forgotten who i am.
