The Fediverse platform GoToSocial has entered beta testing (announcement is at https://gts.superseriousbusiness.org/@gotosocial/statuses/01JA7XCQ9F0R62XKQ3E65743HW).

GTS has many safety features that Mastodon is still missing, for example GTS users can set who can reply, boost or like their posts. Admins can also optionally set a GTS server to use "allowlists", where only selected servers are allowed to federate with them.

@FediTips @gotosocial does anyone know if you have to stand up your own server for GoToSocial or if you can join an existing instance? I read through the documentation and it seems focus on standing up your own server.

During the alpha testing phase the developers basically said "don't use this software it's not ready yet!" so I think a lot of people were reluctant to set up public GTS instances.

Now that it's in beta testing, the GTS developers are okay with people using the software, so perhaps we will see public instances being set up?
