@fraying Absolutely yes, but it’s possible some existing subgroups are still holding it together there. I don’t support anything on or about xitter, but a thin structure of known contacts can be a kind of safe haven, even in a war zone. Or is my reply bullshit?

@wendinoakland @fraying When a support group that meets in a bar realizes that the bar has turned into a Nazi bar, should they stay or go?

The Nazis don’t bother them much. But it’s a Nazi bar. Should they try to meet somewhere else or no?

@drahardja @wendinoakland @fraying I believe the only sensible thing for that support group to do is lock the doors from the outside and burn it down.

Death to all Nazis.

Try to leave, yes. Succeed in leaving... good luck.

@wendinoakland I think that was a reasonable approach a year ago. Now? Way past time to find a new bar.

@fraying I wish we had better on-ramping here on the #fedi and could eliminate the targeted, othering harassment problems. This place is pretty comfortable, just a little rocky for too many.

@wendinoakland Yeah. It's a problem anywhere that's not consciously created to combat that tendency. I saw it happen on Bluesky, too.

In truth, the era of "the one site with everyone in it" is over. We will create separate spaces online with some overlap, and that's okay. That's how humans have always done community.

@wendinoakland @fraying I heard someone say Xitter is like Paris under Nazi occupation. I think some original small groups hold out in hope they’ll eventually piss off and things will go back as they are.

@Emmacox @fraying Interesting, probably a really apt analogy. You’re stuck in absolute hell, with nazis, but it’s still Paris, your home…

@Emmacox @wendinoakland Really bad analogy! Parisians couldn’t just leave with a click of a button.

Websites are not countries.
