Someone is DDOSing the internet archive, so we've been down for hours. According to their twitter, they're doing it just to do it. Just because they can. No statement, no idea, no demands.

Meanwhile, we literally rescued 400,000 dissertations from being pulped.

I like our side.

May they all suffer paper cuts under their fingernails, then handle lemons.

What bozos.

@textfiles of *course* they have a Twitter account

Charlotte

@textfiles@mastodon.archive.org The Internet Archive is doing good work as always. Hope the DDOS settles.

@textfiles Sadly seen some "very logical" people suggesting you're doing it al wrong. I am not sure you're doing it *right* but I would say that I'm pretty sure that while there may be some problems with your approach, your goals, and overall direction I support. Good luck with everything.

@textfiles You are heroes. I mean, the DDos is a pain, sure, but I mean heroes for rescuing those dissertations (hope that digitizing them goes smoothly).

@textfiles Well that explains why I can't get in...what a waste of skin and oxygen, they are!

@textfiles

WTF.

I swear, Brewster is doing the work of God. It's also unbelievable that a university would grind human knoweldge.

@textfiles

It was up for a bit, displaying a message claiming to have breached security and stolen 31 million passwords.

Aaaaaand it's down again.

I wonder if one of those copyright-trolling crooks who successfully sued IA sicced these criminals on it, just to add insult to injury.

Heretical_i

@textfiles Update 830pdt It appears archive today is damaged and not functioning correctly. A search on the ft url produces a loopback to the search panel without option to archive a url...

See this post kafeneio.social/@heretical_i/1 Apparently happening at archive.today, which DOES have legal arrangements that allow them paywall bypass many sites.

@textfiles Ugh. The internet archive is the closest thing to a public service for the whole world. Why would someone DDOS it? Its not even an attractive target, given how high the load already is on your infra.
Good idea just putting up that static page and waiting :)

@brot @textfiles Let me introduce you to my little friend, stochastic destabilisation

Ben Lubar (any pronouns)

@textfiles the number of bits of entropy of a phrase starting with "according to their twitter" ending with "they don't have a plan and are just breaking things because they felt like it" has gone down significantly in recent years

@textfiles

Is there a Streisand effect, but for constructive, regenerative, restorative, hyperlinking beauty?

If not, what should it be called?

Michael Weinberg

@textfiles Thanks for the update.

Can the Internet Archive point to a different place than Twitter for its status updates?

itsapersonn

@textfiles Not just a DDoS now, literally an entire hack. This is honestly really scary.

Thanks for everything you do! It's important. Stay strong. #HugOps

@textfiles seems like it's a breach, given have I been owned...

Plus the JS popups people screenshotted...

@textfiles As someone who’s been working on one of those for 4 years now, the scale of losing 400,000 times that amount of work is kinda hard to imagine. To think of that as an actual decision?

Leen Kievit

@mizah @textfiles It's just one of many copies I guess, from people who graduated elsewhere. IIRC I had to hand in about 50 copies of mine to be sent to various libraries.

@textfiles @SallyStrange For a brief lovely moment I thought someone was MS-DOSing the internet archive, and I wanted to react “aw how quaint, but what about the 8.3 limits…”

Jacob Tender

@textfiles I’d imagine it’s to annoy those of us attempting to update our passwords. What a bother. Carry on!

Stu

@textfiles screw the haters of this vital resource. Will donate, again, once things are under control.

All the best.

JamesTDG

@textfiles honestly, it's absurd that they would opt into breaching the IA just for fun. At least the burning of the library of Alexandria had a reason!

Matt Simpson

@textfiles I feel kinda silly for asking, but worse if I didn't... Is there anything I (we) can do to help? If so, post here or message me.

Kevin Riggle

@textfiles Do y’all need/want outside cybersecurity help? This is my bread and butter, I used to do incident response at Akamai and would be happy to hop on a call as early as tonight, DM me if interested

Psyvacy

@textfiles I mean, my thesis can safely be pulped, there's nothing of value in there. But I'm sure other people's is much more worth preserving.

You're doing good and noble work.

Felix Frank

@textfiles they did express an intention to support Palestine (citing their assumption that IA is run by Americans).
It stands to reason how effective these attacks will be to support their political ideals, but this is their claim.

Laird Brian Turbo of Sandwich

@textfiles What can we do to help? Donations … volunteer hours … press?

Maciek

@textfiles Clodflare might repair their reputation a bit if they took you in for free.
