tried the value+color layer thing people seem to do when painting, but I forgot which one I had to set to multiply so I ended up making the setting the color layer's blend mode to Color instead

also realized too late I should've just used black and white brushes at like 10% opacity for values, instead of directly using grays which made values too soft I think
