Looks like Libre.fm, an open-software version of Last.fm by the GNU Project, is being reworked to support ActivityPub!

Screenshot from the linked article reading:

"Next steps

• I [Matt Lee] want you to have a personal website and have your listening habits on your own website, not my website. But I know some people won't want that, which is fine but Libre.fm is effectively a silo (other than Last.fm which it talks to, although federation with other instances has been possible for a long time) and has over 372,000 registered users and 302 million scrobbles.

• Some new features will only work if you're publishing your Libre.fm stats on your own website.

• A new version of Libre.fm's front end will appear later, powered by Ruby on Rails.

• [highlighted] We're also going to put our full attention to supporting ActivityPub where possible. [end highlight]"
Continued screenshot from the linked website, reading:

"• Libre.fm will evolve from a single project into a larger project with a few distinct aims:

1. Being a good IndieWeb citizen.
2. Being a genuinely useful tool for artists (payments!)
3. Being a good member on the social web, which means supporting ActivityPub where it is useful. Maybe you could share what you're listening to on the social web?

(For those of you who've used Libre.fm since 2009, you'll remember the GNU social project we started back at the start of Libre.fm (or GNU FM). Personally I hope you also remember our roots in the history of the social web. GNU social continues to this day, but I'm no longer involved and no longer using the software. Happily, GNU social now supports ActivityPub so things are coming full circle.)

What you can do today

1. Get a personal website.
2. Get an account on the social web and follow me!
3. Read https://bored.city and send me feedback.
4. Donate to keep the lights on. https://libre.fm/donate.php -- our expenses are low, but a few dollars here and there helps buy new domain names, renew things, pay for the outgoing email service, etc."

@MOULE After CBS abolished the good parts of #LastFM like discussion forums and group charts, integration of scrobbling with ActivityPub would be great.

@MOULE this could be good. I've over 20 years of plays in there lol

@MOULE actually I lie. It's _almost_ 20 years

It's a partial screenshot from my last.fm account. Last.fm is a service that logs every music track you play and can give you charts and recommendations and socials etc.
This shot shows I joined on 22 Feb 2005 and I've listened to 171,421 tracks it knows about, by 10,391 artists

I definitely agree with Matt about having one's own website. In my case though, instead of a main "home page" where I could implement federated features (I am not technically skilled enough to do this), I'm using the moule.world domain name as my "ID" on the web, and over time intend to set up a wiki, possibly Funkwhale etc. It'll happen over time, at my own pace.

It just feels so liberating running your own stuff! :MOULE_Happy:

@MOULE Definitely agree. Limitless personalization options. The best way to create your identity on the internet.

Social networks have killed all self-expression options by just shoving all of us in equal sized boxes with the same color, and they only allow us to change the sticker on the side.

> Proprietary social media is dead or dying. The social web is the future.

Overly optimistic, but a great rallying cry nonetheless :)

@smallcircles @MOULE OK, people, we have our mission.
Now let's make it happen.

@MOULE
I wish there was an accounts server for everything ActivityPub. Then you could log in to everyone of your services with the same account.

@MOULE that's pretty awesome stuff.

Last.fm lost its shine a long time ago (was genuinely great at one point) - AP provides a good reason to switch, particularly if there's a last.fm import option.

@MOULE oh wow this looks so cool! Just recently got into scrobbling so this is a no-brainier to join immediately…

@MOULE why do they block people using VPNs? :(
