To be fair, that was one incredibly biased judge. Previous trials have seen the activists released because they were allowed to address the court about their motivations. When presented with the science & reality, most juries acquit.
This judge took enormous pains to prevent the accused even mentioning the words climate change, up to clearing the courtroom on multiple occasions.
It's not representative, and although I don't know if they can appeal, with a different judge ...
