@fsf I’ve been involved with computers/programming since the early 80s. Some of the BEST software comes from folks who are not only passionate about their work, they share it with others out of pride and desire for input/contribution from others to improve the product. Should you be paid for your work? Sure. That is, if the money is that important to you. Otherwise, fostering goodwill goes a long way toward developing trust, community and a solid customer base for paid software.
