Fun* fact in this video: the 'disposable' vapes thrown away in Britain alone contain enough lithium batteries to make 1.2 Million e-bikes.
I've been independently powering things with vape batteries that I've rescued before seeing this video. Pull out the cell, add a cheap usb charging module and you have a fully rechargeable 3.7v power source. If you need higher voltage you can put them in series and you can even get multi-cell balancing modules for next to nothing if you want to have a few in parallel for more current.
I don't trust them for anything critical, but they're great for low-budget projects as the cells are completely free. My bike lights are all powered by them (one can run a flashing bike light for a couple of weeks' use), as well as various other things that had their batteries die, or that didn't come with rechargeable batteries.
I also only charge them somewhere flameproof, though I haven't had any issues so far.

There's a better video for the kind of use I put them to here: youtube.com/watch?v=qiUyMLdVyf

@stib
Disposable vapes should be prohibited. Everything that is not reusable should be and people who sell crap like that should be punished. I don't get how today, when we should be aware of the climate crisis, people are allowed to sell that crap. Sorry for the rant. These vapes are laying around on the floor a lot where live. Drives me crazy.

@l05tchild Yep, nothing makes me feel like we're doomed as a species than a bubblegum flavoured vape containing a fully functional lithium battery getting washed down the drain into the ocean when it rains.

Dasy2k1

@l05tchild @stib I agree. But the government in its wisdom decided to regulate reusable capes out of existence instead while seemingly leaving the disposable ones unaffected

@stib
Why do the manufacturers use lithium cells in disposable products? Are they really the cheapest option?

publius

@CppGuy @stib

Not necessarily cheapest, but most accessible.

stib

@CppGuy It's probably hard to get something that supplies the amount of current they need without using li-ion. But governments should be taxing single-use lithium into oblivion. Reuseable batteries and heating elements should be the default.

@stib @CppGuy I was about to comment on this: I've been using the same three batteries for my device for 5+ years at this point. The only reason for single use devices is because the profit margin is higher. Reichargeable and re-fillable devices are more efficient and less wasteful.

But, the counter argument is: it's more fiddly, and less convenient.

Personally, I think it just is an appeal to people's laziness.

@stib When I first heard about vapes I was excited because hey look, a way to wean smokers off smoking! I foolishly thought that maybe it could spell the end of that horrific practice.

Heh.

stib

@WhiteCatTamer Another good idea except capitalism happened.

Something - many things- are way too cheap if it’s economically natural to throw away stuff that’s so useful for power and so damaging as waste

But it’s really cheering to see reuse

We can't find sensible priced cr2302 batteries for the kids bike lights because of nonsense like those vapes. Just the most obvious, of the face of it, ban this nonsense product of the last 15 years.
All hail the market.

Luke

@stib interesting stuff! Id love to know more about your bike lamp running off a vape battery!

@luke My front light is a very old ebay special, that runs off a 3.7v battery pack. Originally it came with two 18650 cells, wired in parallel, which is slightly problematic. Li-ion batteries in parallel need to be matched, which is tricky, so buying matched pairs is quite expensive.
I can't be arsed doing the hard work to find two vape cells with the same characteristics, so I just check that their charged voltage is the same (enough), bung em together, and if they die in a couple of months then oh no, so anyway.
My back lights are an old Cateye set. The teeny tiny lithium cell in them gave up the ghost, so I wired an external plug to where the cell was connected to the circuit board, and run them off a single vape cell. The capacity of the vape cell is probably a dozen times the original so I only need to charge them once a fortnight or so (though since I'm paranoid about it I actually charge it every weekend). I also carry a spare cell in my saddle bag, because why not.
For charging them I use USB charging modules I buy of the internet (see below). This means that I can charge them anywhere I can find a usb plug, and it provides proper charging circuitry and overcurrent / undervoltage protection. If I wasn't so lazy I might 3D print a case or something, but instead I just hot-glue it all together and wrap it in electrical tape.

@stib Amazing, thanks for the info. I'm rubbish at hardware and electrical but also fascinated by it. Also hate seeing waste such as disposed vapes so very tempted to try something myself. Cheers.

@luke
Good to hear. Do take care tho, lithium batteries are effective incendiary devices.

Zephod Beeblebrox

@stib lucky sod. I never see discarded vapes nor in fact any litter here in SC.

stib

@BritishTechGuru
Where's SC? How do they keep the litter level down there?

Zephod Beeblebrox

@stib No idea. I just don't see any. South Carolina.

Anarcho-Daddy

@BritishTechGuru @stib

Yeah im down in beaufort and i assure you they are being used and put in landfill. Hypothetically there could be an ewaste collection but man this is not the biggest problem in the world today.

Linza

@stib has anyone built an arc welder with a thousand of them

asking on behalf of half-used microphone battery collectors worldwide

stib

@Linza
Would love to see it. From a safe distance upwind.

CosmicBlaze

@stib Why do we throw away nearly everything 🤔 reduce,reuse and recycle ♻️ really good idea 👍🏻

nidoЯ

@stib you can recharge the li-ion batteries using a TP4056 charging board, then use the batteries for whatever you want. I get these boards in strips of 5 from Aliexpress, for a couple of euros, including post.

I re-use found vape batteries in my Bluetooth receiver projects...I get the Bluetooth module board for €1.50 of Aliexpress and with the TP4056 and an old vape battery can make a nice rechargeable unit that is the size of a matchbox for a few euros.

Murat

@stib That's good recycling there but ultimately there isn't enough lithium in the world, mined or unmined, to satisfy all storage needs. muratk5n.github.io/thirdwave/e

stib

@muratk5n I guess that makes disposable vapes even worse.

Ariaflame

@muratk5n @stib Luckily other forms of battery are being developed.

Murat

@ariaflame @stib That is like waiting for nuclear fusion. Always 30 years away. Hydrogen based storage is much better. muratk5n.github.io/thirdwave/e

Ariaflame

@muratk5n @stib I'm sure they will all be useful for different storage times and applications.

Come On Giant Asteroid!

@stib

Big Clive over on the Tube of Youse let his followers in on this (DvaapS - Disposable vapes as a power Source) though I don't think he has yet created an actual power bank.

Brilliant!

Lufty Foxyloon

@stib I've been salvaging the batteries out of discarded vapes anytime I come across some. (Even going as far as to ask folks who partake to save their empty pens for me.) I'm definitely not above picking them out of trash cans or otherwise grabbing discarded on the ground! That's the closest I can get to free energy, hehe~ :blobfoxlaugh:

A 750mAH battery cell may not be terribly useful by itself, but they do add up to a decent capacity once wired in series/parallel.

Fabian Zolar

@stib thanks for sharing, since they have been around I was wondering how one could use the technical inside leftovers👏👏

Privatised Sentient Water

@stib A really great video for this. I've bought all the required materials for these projects & will repurpose them soon. It's an environmental travesty.

It's like throwing away silver cutlery after every use.

Григорий Клюшников

They are now also making slightly less disposable vapes that have a USB-C port for charging but when the liquid runs out it can't be refilled.
