 All the wild racist conspiracy theories we have to debunk keep us from talking about the quieter things the GOP wants to do. One very un-sexy one is dismantling and privatizing the National Weather Service. NWS is how government should work. It's a pure public service. It saves lives. You probably don't think about it on an average day, but it benefits you constantly. A system that works so well without profit motive can't exist in their worldview, and if they have their way, it won't. 6 comments
 @ianrosewrites "the deep state" is "potentially secret and unauthorized networks of power operating independently of a state's political leadership in pursuit of their own agenda and goals" and while there are certainly organizations within the US that fit that description, i would much rather flatly reject the right wing framing that everyday citizen-focused services like the NWS etc are part of that. @ianrosewrites to them the IRS going after rich tax dodgers is morally comparable to like, the FBI trying to get MLK to kill himself and just... no. i do not accept their framing, the "deep state" nomenclature that trump brought to the foreground, or anything connected to it. ordinary citizens want libraries and streets and accurate weather reports and botulism-free food, and we should electorally beat conservatives over the head with the fact that they hate those things.  @CStamp @ianrosewrites
They know what they want is unpopular, so they obfuscate and do everything they can to suppress voter turnout. No sense in trying to "debate" them or "win them over" in my opinion. Making sure people vote is more important. @ianrosewrites if they get rid of it #Elon can set up his own and sell the results back to the Gov as a consumer… and then sue them if they ever try to get out of the contract |

Good government is absolutely possible, and it is boring. If you don't have to actively think about a federal agency, that agency is doing its job. Many of them do, every day. The deep state rocks.
