Soo.. uhm.. is there any country out there that currently doesn't slowly move towards a surveillance state? :neocat_think:

@alyx Are you asking for a list of countries that are moving fast towards a surveillance state with that question? :neocat_googly_woozy:

@CatboyCody That wasn't exactly my goal, no :neocat_laugh_nervous:

But actually kinda getting desperate :neocat_googly_shocked:
There are more than 200 countries in this world and so far nobody was able to come up with just one that actually is not trying to do that..
Guess humanity is doomed :neocat_googly_shocked:

@alyx @CatboyCody I mean, I could always go for a dysfunctional one like idk Trinidad and Tobago. Or one that has better things to do like ukraine or palestine.

@alyx

Anecdote!

I worked for a Swiss company a while back and they had impressively strict regulation around privacy. I can't speak to Swiss culture in general.

@alyx Maybe China, because they did it already, and even if not, they‘re not moving slowly.

ay :verified: :verified:

@alyx all of them have FOMO but iirc germany is one of the few ones that, for instance, disapproved of chatcontrol

@notsureither Oh no, our interior ministry was really pushing for it. But, then got "overruled" by the leading party due to the bad press.

Now the new idea they are pushing for is introducing a law, allowing police forces to "sneak" / break into your home so they can install spy software on your devices.
