I propose: pw;dr to mean “paywall, didn’t read”

I'm not sure what you mean by "contain a russian tracker". It's a self-funded site run by a single Russian citizen, based somewhere in Europe. There is no malware, nothing is installed, nothing is 'tracked'. All according to the article you linked. It does not appear to be an FSB operation or tied to the Russian government in any way. Is the implication that because they are Russian it's a bad/dangerous site? The article you shared ends with "I for one will be buying Denis/Masha/whoever a well deserved cup of coffee." ... So I guess the author isn't alarmed? Probably just respect for technical skill. @ttpphd @mrblissett it literally says "uses a Russian analytics engine", calling that a "Russian tracker" would be like calling Google analytics an "American tracker" or the way you're using it, a "cia tracker". Like, I block all analytics stuff for privacy reasons, and all analytics services know way too much about everyone, but most of the Internet uses one service or another, it's not malicious by itself. https://ublockorigin.com/ will dispense with the ads, and if the content is truly appalling chuck the whole site on its blacklist @fixatedpersonsunit that's a good point. I use Firefox on my laptop with adblock and it's great but I usually use "naked browser" on android since it's uncluttered and fast but it doesn't support extensions so that's a good reason for me to switch to Firefox on mobile too 🤔 Doesn't seem as effective on android, plus my phone isn't rooted so I tend to mistrust it in general and avoid apps Really should get a dumb phone @eskibrew @fixatedpersonsunit I switched a while back to Firefox with ublock and it seems effective. On my LAN I have a Pi that probably helps, but while mobile/vpn I haven't noticed any ads (and it'd be very obvious). Only thing I use Chrome for is as a backup to check if the site's broken or odd on Firefox @mediopocillo It’s such a universal experience that doubtless many people have had the same idea. 🙂 @Moss @Moss hell yes. @Infrogmation @Moss sr;tuavispkvottots: Stopped reading; the unrelated autoplaying video i scrolled past kept visible on the top of the screen. What about kh;dv: #Kamala #Harris, didn't vote? Sorry for going off topic but time for #change is running out fast. #KamalaHarris #VoteThirdParty #JillStein2024 #JillStein @palestine @stg_kn @Moss @palestine if you’re gonna vote third party it doesn’t matter when you do it. Voting for Jill Stein on February 28 will have exactly the same effect as voting for her on November 5th. @theothersimo @Moss @palestine Well, what "effect" will voting for #Kamala (or #Donald, for that matter) have? 🤔 @theothersimo @Moss @palestine Voting Dr. #Stein is not an option for any of us: wrong passport. Nevertheless, we do behave in a similar way within our own #rigged #voting #system because we believe it's all we can do, i.e., either we #boycott #elections altogether or we (symbolically, for now) vote for the least #evil #party. Preferably in droves (which we are calling for). It's a matter of expressing an #opinion, first and foremost, and if it leads to a bit of #confusion, then so be be it. 1: If you can apologise for it in the same toot, you can just not toot it in the first place. 2: Not everyone is an American. 3: Not everyone is interested in the US 4: Muted so you see this, blocked tomorrow. @stg_kn how about you touch some grass and stop sabotaging democracy whether you like it or not, in the american system voting for a third party is the same as not voting Self-evidently wrong. Whatever sanity sabotaging grass it is that you are smoking in your crazy little #Kamala cult, maybe you try and get some manners, some adult brains and a bit of capitalization before ever talking to us again. Good riddance, boy. @stg_kn @Moss @palestine What you say: "I'm going to vote third-party / Trump / nobody because I don't like Harris' foreign policy" What I hear: "I'm happy to put your sister, nephew and brother-in-law in danger because I don't like Harris' foreign policy". Want third-party to be a viable option? FIRST fix your system, THEN vote third-party. @RememberUsAlways Listen up and listen good, hasbara troll: You do NOT get to wave away genocide just because it's a US foreign policy failing. Enjoy your (rare) block. @Daveosaurus @stg_kn @Moss @palestine Can you explain how voting for Harris will help fix the system? Because I'm seeing her as having a lot to lose by changing the system. @grumble209 @stg_kn @Moss @palestine Learn from history. 40 years ago the New Zealand system was patently broken in much the same way. People agitated for electoral reform and wouldn't shut up until it was achieved. @Daveosaurus @stg_kn @Moss @palestine But how did New Zealand get the money out of politics? By voting for candidates who were funded by huge donors? Or by not voting for candidates who were funded by huge donors? @Daveosaurus @stg_kn @Moss @palestine What you need to recognize is that #Genz and #Millennials have been so screwed over by #Boomers that they have taken another path. They vote for you if your values align with theirs, particularly on critical issues. #Harris largely does. #Genocide is a deal breaker. She refuses to denounce genocide. So they may simply NOT vote. You may think that is stupid. It isn't. They do NOT accept the cold war game theory of forced choice. She must earn their vote @Daveosaurus @stg_kn @Moss @palestine Also recognize that if #Harris refuses to come around, and loses, that #Genz and #Millennials will feel no responsibility for her loss. That will belong entirely to her. If that causes you grief, you have a way to fix it. Convince Harris that supporting #genocide is an unacceptable, immoral, unethical and illegal thing to do, and CHANGE her stance on the Israeli genocide. That is on you. @Moss I like it The security admin in read "password, disaster recovery" 😅 Good journalism, good writing, good research is valuable. If you don't want to pay for it then, I am afraid you get what you pay for: usually "crap" @vashbear @Moss there's a 5th: public funding. this doesn't mean "government run propaganda outlets", the money can be distributed by an independent trust which is essentially where a big chunk of NPR and PBS funding comes from via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The BBC is another example. Both NPR and BBC do some of the best journalism in the world imo and we should use this model a lot more. Journalism is a public good and the public should fund it accordingly @Moss make sure to follow with misguided arguements based off the 12 words you could read. Make it obvious that sharing paywalled links wastes everyone's time @Moss I've been using this for a while. Also v;dr because I read a lot faster than I watch. @Moss There's still about 40% chance that just switching to Reader View in Firefox will disable the paywall. ww;dr "Waymo-walled; didn't read" When hit with a "train our self-driving cars" Google reCAPTCHA. @Moss I think we should be paying for journalism actually. The advertising model has caused clickbait and fake news to profilate and quality of journalism to tank. @gimulnautti If we can select and distinguish between independent journalism and corporate shill “journalism”, then yes. But most articles that get shared are from entities far older than clicks, and so embedded in the moneyed police state that even the occasional good article is just bait. @Moss I would like to propose a tag #PWDR for this. There is already a #TLDR tag and several variants, why not PWDR? I've used it already today, https://indieweb.social/@mcrocker/113062632594114548 , but I linked to the top post in that post, so, I hope I don't send anybody's Fedi-client (Mastodon client) into an infinite loop 🤣 Some more: https://njr.prose.sh/abbreviations including many from https://www.tomgauld.com @Moss@beige.party I would also add: 👍 Which, for academic articles, should be exceedingly rare by now: https://bjoern.brembs.net/2016/12/so-your-institute-went-cold-turkey-on-publisher-x-what-now/ (From 2016) I’ve muted notifications on this but since you’re looking here, donate money to the next mutual aid request you see. I don't disagree. In the interim I highly recommend Archive.ph which gets around cookie bullshit and paywall |
@Moss Concur.
