I recently tried #Epicyon, #Honk, #Ktiestic, and #GoToSocial before I landed on #Pleroma (perhaps a month ago). I found that they all had some problems with either outgoing or incoming subscriptions — they were not as interoperable as I had hoped for.

I haven't experienced any serious incompatibilities between my Pleroma instance and #Mastodon instances, and I like the #Erlang networking stack.
