@georgepenney the noisy and demanding self checkouts I've encountered in the USA, Canada and the UK -- PLACE THE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA! REMOVE THE LAST ITEM FROM THE BAG! etc.

Here in the Netherlands, low volume beeps are all you hear. No scales on the kiosk to check that you're not cheating somehow. I haven't had to argue with one here ever.

@xinit @georgepenney The ones here the staff turn the volume down, they're sick of it too.

'Surprising item in bagging area'
That would be a bag..
'REMOVE ITEM FROM BAGGING AREA!!'
Why is it called a bagging area then?
'YOU HAVE 30 SECONDS TO COMPLY!' <guns lower from ceiling>

@tony @georgepenney back in Toronto, a Boots-style pharmacy+ shop introduced their kiosks with incredibly loud, and very obviously non-professionally recorded voice. We assumed it was the IT guy's kid or something.

@xinit @georgepenney I'm in NL this weekend and I've actually been genuinely impressed by how simple the self checkouts have been. They're a little close together in the AH I've been using most, but still, as self checkout experiences go, top marks!

@natural20 @georgepenney many of the local neighbourhood stores used to have maybe 4 regular cashiers. In the place of two of those, our local store had 10-12 kiosks placed. No more lines snaking back to the bakery.

@xinit @georgepenney That loud aggressive "UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA!!!" that is low key insinuating that you're a thief. I despise and avoid the UK self-checkout systems but in the Netherlands I use them most of the time, preferably with a portable scanner.
