@ireneista Internal battles you've dealt with your life being described to you is like breathing for the first time. I didn't know Autistic Burnout was a thing even though the hallmarks of it's description have been constant in my life.

@ireneista new term to me. After a bit of reading I understand autistic burnout as:

* loss of mental and emotional functions and skills due to mental~emotional exhaustion

What distinguishes it from 'regular' burnout is that:

* said exhaustion is from interacting with the world in ways which don't exhaust normals, and may even enervate them (such as conversation, eye contact, noise, lights, ...)

Is this more or less correct?

Irenes (many)

@maphew the distinction is more than that. the exhaustion is of a different nature - probably hard to imagine if you've never experienced it. your summary is a reasonable start though.

(we would have said neurotypical or allistic, but mostly for the sake of precision)

Stephan Matthiesen

@ireneista @maphew
Yes, the exhaustion is of a different nature and that probably makes it hard to understand for neurotypicals.

For me, I have no problem working hard on intellectual tasks (translating science books) pretty much all day, but I completely collapse at any social interaction (or even the thought of it) and get panic and a kind of brain freeze.

But because I still do incredible amounts of work, people can't believe I'm suffering of burnout.

@ireneista Thanks for the link!! It's great news that finally someone is looking into this!

David's Alias

@ireneista
It's written in an advocate's way too, writing how typical expectations of these folk need to change in the paper's conclusion.

I'm so glad we finally have some official recognition on this.

@ireneista additionally i can recommend, they refference the paper you linked, and deep dive on the differences between various conditions in all their articles.

@ireneista I am reminded of hearing impairment burnout. Retired now, but I remember how having to be "on" all day to catch the all-important contextless nouns, and trying to behave like a hearing person while doing so, left me a gibbering wreck by five o-clock.

@ireneista That was such a validating read. I feel like I can finally explain to people what sends me into burnout and may be able to implement strategies to avoid it!

Carl

@ireneista They find out everything! Everything!
Of course they could have listened to people within the autistic spectrum like decades ago...

HeroOfDermwood

@ireneista I don't think I have ever broke down reading a study like this. So much of it hit home and I felt validated. The comment about not being able to enjoy Christmas was very much how I have felt over the last years while I have silently suffered.

Irenes (many)

@HeroOfDermwood yeah! yeah, it's so important to get this stuff out there, and in a durable form that isn't just oral tradition

DELETED

@ireneista I'm not autistic, but there's a lot of ADHD and so many things from this paper fits to me.

Maybe there should be a broader term for that like "neurodivergent burnout", I don't know, but I'm glad someone is looking into this

@ireneista entire results section feels like reading a play-by-play of my adulthood hahaha.. ough. :vlpn_snug_sob:

@leggylav right??? it's not a new realization to us, we've had this vocabulary for quite a while, but we received it as oral tradition from the community. having it written down in durable form, and in a way that invites further study, is amazing and we hope it helps lots of people.
