You simply must try calcgpt.io, a calculator that uses a LLM to do math

@neilk Why would anyone do that. Basic maths is implemented in programming languages...

ROTOPE~1 :yell:

@anke because this is the future of inteligence

Andreas K

@anke @neilk It's an AI. basic maths, like counting in this case, is something humans learn in kindergarten.

OpenAI has been, in a totally Elon-Musk-esque style promising that they have AGI just around the corner (it's OpenAI's FSD fantasy).

The media/industry presents ChatGPT as a tool that can reason, e.g. develop software. Then it stands to argue that it can count. One-off errors are ugly and common.

And obviously, it cannot do basic maths. Not even stuff some animals sometime manage.

always tired (moved to chaos)

@anke @neilk But the usual maths in programming languages don't consume so much energy. Even if implemented in Brainf*ck. We must consume energy. For economic growth or something. /s

Chase

@anke @neilk because people are actually doing this. This is pointing out how dumb it is to use llms to do math

Cley Faye

@Anke @neilk the presence of a "regenerate" button tells me this is made as a joke.

Craig Rangoon

@neilk If you scroll down a bit, there's an artist's statement explaining. (also written by ChatGPT, lol)

John Harris

@Anke @neilk People will do it anyway. Hearing that AI is supposed to be so great, they'll use it uncritically like they do Google's search box. People will use what they have to hand.

David P

@neilk

And uses Timelord technology to "regenerate".

Chris Armstrong

@neilk
You can even ask ChatGPT "Would a large language model be good for doing arithmetic?" and it'll reply with 300 words laughing at you.

telles

@neilk @isleofmandan I asked a local llm to add up the tally of a few books I wanted to buy and it kept getting the figures wrong.

j_bertolotti

@neilk Even setting "craziness of the answer" to zero doesn't help. Still getting nonsensical answers to very basic math.

Tarim

@neilk It got one right - but then added some craziness afterwards

MolarFox :fox_happy_blep:

@neilk student who didn't revise for their end of year maths exam and has to fudge the answers simulator

Uwe Sinha

@slothrop @annika @neilk @qbi Yay! Say goodbye to division by zero errors!

Amata :verified_genderqueer:

@annika @neilk bwahahahahaha P=NP 😂

Edit: i clicked and read about the calculator, that makes it funnier these answers!

Marcos Dione

@neilk I', pretty sure that's either PHP or JS :-P

/shitpost

Pepper1700 :veritrek_gold:

@angiebaby @neilk
Ok, I am in public and should stay politicaly correct.........................

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT????????

This can't be real!!!!!!!!

Galaxy :neurodiversity:

@neilk Not 15, not 20, no let's just completely off the rails, yeah buddy! 🤣

Neil Kandalgaonkar

This is by Calvin Liang, who has many other projects at calvin.sh .

w4tsn ~> :idle:

@neilk it must know something we don't! :blobCatEyesCoffee:

cm_jc

@neilk and if you want a calculator that works on arrays (sorry no GPT):
github.com/dnparadice/PyCalc

jonny (good kind)

@neilk
I love how it doesnt capture even the basic form of arithmetic. The results shouldnt ever have symbols in them but when you put a thing that looks like an output as an input its like "hmm something is missing. ..."

Bob LeFridge

@neilk

It's cool. And the be honest, I'm not sure if it answered my query or not.

Thom.

@neilk model hasn't been trained for math so 🤪

Martin EA7KRC

@neilk
Ah this is the future they talk about so enthusiastically. Seems reasonable to me, it goes hand in hand with the lies that are now truth

Preston de Guise

@neilk This is joyful comedy, thank you. I think so far this is my favourite.

Charlie Stross

@neilk @platypusparent I want to see every CEO who uses AI as an excuse to cut staff numbers FORCED to use this abomination to do their quarterly accounts.

Make them eat their own dog food, still in the can.

ScottMGS

@cstross @neilk @platypusparent To paraphrase one of my dad's favorite jokes:

When you ask bookkeepers what 1+1+1+1 is they'll say, "4". When you ask accountants, they'll say, "What do you want it to be? 13? Sure I can do that."

Central Illumination Agency

@neilk my teenagers are quite in love with ChatGPT. Unsurprising, considering it does their homework.

I showed them CalcGPT, and it looks like it got them thinking at least a little…

Uilebheist

@slothrop @neilk Hopefully, not thinking about using it for math homework...

DELETED

@neilk Wow... I'm amazed. Now, instead of running a single CPU instruction, I rely on a remote API endpoint which runs on an energy efficient GPU cluster sucking up more energy than a whole country.

Clearly a work of art.

HyperSoop :spinny_cat_aroace: :spinny_fox_agender:

@neilk i give it anything and it just responds with the html for a cloudflare captcha page. brilliant xD

GrayGooGirl :v_lesbian: :1up:

@neilk
If I felt like wasting electricity, I could just turn on my lights... and then leave them on for days before approaching the amount used by a single of these calculations.

藤井太洋, Taiyo Fujii

@neilk thank you, my 9 yos boy got laughed and played for 100 times.

BensGreenGamingAc

@neilk Best I’ve had so far:
100 DIVIDE -25 = 400

/usr/people/flexion

@neilk at least AI will save us from apps crashing due to "division by zero"

Huriken

@neilk Every scientist should use this product! Don't like the result? Just hit "Regenerate" until you get the result you desire. What a blessing.

Martin Hamilton

@neilk Seems legit! <remembers that Copilot in Excel is already a thing> :blobcat_thisisfine:

Helena Viking

@neilk
Funny af! Im using this in my artwork. 😆

ck0

@neilk This is changing my vision of the world !

tanavit

@neilk

Doing math with AI will open new horizons.

😜

F4GRX Sébastien

@neilk THAT is how you code a website. THANK YOU, Calvin Liang!

F4GRX Sébastien

@neilk We should write a web browser where the javascript engine is emulated by chatgpt. Not to write the engine code, but to interpret the actual javascript code from webpages.
