Alex, Smithereen allows mentions with arbitrary text, including empty string (but that's undocumented). Also no Twitter-style "let's pile the usernames of everyone up to the top-level post in the beginning" nonsense. Also no character limit (the max length is as much as a TEXT column in MySQL can hold, iirc 65k).
