Kim Crayton ~ Her/She

And this is why listening to folx with lived experiences of harm is essential when doing liberation work because I have to admit that until I read the caption, I thought that this was a “good” thing

This is why we all need to continually ask ourselves “what am I missing?”

@KimCrayton1 to start with, nobody should be homeless.

@KimCrayton1 It's a good point. Especially because wheelchairs usually have handles and backpacks, which would block it from parking there.

But, speaking of accessibility, your alt text doesn't help at all.

The thing for blind users to know is that this is a picture of a bench where the middle of the seat is missing with that portion of the back marked with a wheelchair logo. However, there is room for a wheelchair next to the bench.

@KimCrayton1 that bench back actively MAKES THINGS WORSE for wheelchair users.

Wheelchairs have nonzero thickness.

So sitting with friends means they're awkwardly behind you, and not beside.

@KimCrayton1 Wouldn't it be easier to build two separate chairs instead of having a useless bar connecting them? I don't understand this design at all 😂

Annelies Kamran

@wesley @KimCrayton1 it would. But then someone could position them next to each other and possibly sleep on them.

also, you must be seen to be actively discriminating against homeless people, not just doing it and sneaking away....

@wesley@theatl.social @KimCrayton1@dair-community.social I even doubt most wheel chairs would fit there with this useless bar blocking the way.

@KimCrayton1 wonder who’s the nut job who dreamed that up. It’s a bad design on so many levels.

@KimCrayton1 I have a bed and mattress I’d be happy to donate to put right next to that.

@KimCrayton1 first time I saw one of these I thought wouldn't a wheelchair user just park to the side or front of the bench at a comfortable distance and angle for chatting?

Backing into that space would have the effect of being in different rows of seating. Going forward into the gap would be better for talking to someone on the bench but then the bars are just awkward and useless. Which is true in any case.

No way this was ever designed with wheelchairs in mind.

@KimCrayton1 Hi ! could you update your alt tag, please ? It does not convey why the bench is anti-homeless.

You may have to add that the bench are like two chairs 1m/3ft apart, but linked by a back with a handicapped logo.
