@PastaThief I genuinely cannot tell if this is a @NanoRaptor creation or not.

@NanoRaptor That’s one big ass switch! Definitely won’t fit in 2U, though!

DELETED

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief actual cats travel through these cables carrying disks on their backs

DELETED

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief don’t be fooled though, that’s not why they’re called cat cables. cats actually got their name from being the creatures that travel in the cables

bugbear

@zens I had no idea I needed a short story about this.

Michael Gemar

@zens @NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief Never underestimate the bandwidth of a load of cats carrying thumb drives.

DarkCyberman

@PastaThief @NanoRaptor @zens @nealjennings I thought this was a pigeon IP extension where the air medium is embedded in the cat medium. The basic version lets the pigeon piggyback (sort of) with the cat packet. And there is a compression option that digests the air medium and allows faster transfer speeds in the cat-cable <fantasy overload/>

@NanoRaptor This is where you plug in when you subscribe to one of those ‘firehose’ type deals, like Twitter used to have.

Ooooh... there's also a nice phone patch panel to the left. 😅🤪

@EdwinG @NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief yes! I came here to make the same RJ 12 comment 😁

@yakkoj @NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief they were removed after the neighbours complained about the blinkinlights keeping them awake at night.

Thirty years later and I've finally found the building that Magic Cap should have used for their "Internet Center"

A screenshot of Magic Cap, an early handheld OS, showing an extremely skeuomorphic view of how a user gets to the internet (it is in a giant building called the Internet Center).
gunstick

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief can you show the other end of the cable where the cats exit?

stodarahodan

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief it’s unfortunate that the introduction of „big cat“ coincided with a global copper shortage shortly after its widespread adoption

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief fix the perspective, put an elephant on the other end of the cable (cable morphing into his trunk) and you have a massive network trunk!

I'll show myself out...

NeoFox

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief that would be some insane switching power...

jokes aside, what if they actually made super massive internet switches like that? :3c
wouldn't be out of the bounds of a company like Google

@NanoRaptor @nealjennings @PastaThief I'm assuming that if you live in that apartment you can get to ground level using the big pink tube slide. Whee!

Elfi, :verifiedtransbian: cute moth

@PastaThief Good to see the giant modem hookups next to it for older hardware :3c

mkj

@PastaThief Is that the downlink port at the very bottom, to the left?

Anthony

@PastaThief To the left is legacy support for RJ-11 voice circuits.

@PastaThief I’m sure this hardware has a backdoor.

Krafting

It even has a QSFP and a SFP ports at the bottom!
